Welcome to MM Tropical Farm 🌱

This is the beginning of a journey focused on growing awareness and appreciation for locally produced food in the Virgin Islands.

Our mission is to build a sustainable agricultural system rooted in:
β€’ Small-scale orchard production
β€’ Farm-fresh eggs
β€’ A future micro-dairy

Beyond production, we’re committed to sharing knowledge β€” exploring both modern farming practices and the rich history of agriculture in the Virgin Islands.

Follow along as we grow, learn, and build something meaningful from the ground up β€” working to reduce food scarcity and improve access to quality, locally grown food across the Virgin Islands.

Golden Bellapple or Passiflora Laurifolia is a sweet cousin to the passion fruit we all know and love. The skin for this fruit is more like a cushion and the pulp has sweet perfume notes and a bit tart when seeds are bitten.

PLANT CARE TIPS:

LIGHTING- Full Sun
SOIL - Loamy
WATERING - Occasionally (every few days to once a week)
CARE DIFFICULTY (1 to 5) - 1

BENEFITS - key nutrients and vitamins (C & B), rich in antioxidants, good fiber, low glycemic index (does not cause steep increase in blood sugar)

USES - eaten fresh, mixed in drinks

STARVING CRUCIAN TIPS/RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. Caterpillars love these especially the small black ones, too many can destroy your plant but a few will assist in vigorous growth.

2. The flowers for the bell apple typically aim down as opposed to the passionfruit flowers which aim up when they open. These flowers have a much heavier perfume scent and you Weill typically smell them before you see them.

3. Pollinated by carpenter bees, just like the passion fruit normal honey bees are too small to pollinate and the black carpenter bees are helpful in pollination.

4. Many ways to propagate new plants but seeds are recommended after 4-5 years. As the plants gets older it becomes more susceptible to certain diseases. Average lifespan of passiflora plants is 7-10 years.

5. Plants will typically fruit 18-24 months, so no extended wait for fruit but time can be shortened with cuttings.

Lemongrass is a must have for the garden!

GARDENING TIPS:

Lighting - Full Sun
Soil - Loamy
Watering - Frequent
Care difficulty (1 to 5) - 2

Benefits - promotes healthy digestion, regulates high blood pressure, aids weight loss, helps reduce anxiety, may increase heart health.

Uses - Cooking, Tea, Essential Oil

Starving Crucian Recommendations :
1. Plant lemongrass in its own area as it can spread and overtake smaller plants nearby as it spreads its shoots.

2. Keep ground around lemongrass moist to ease the spread of roots and shoots.

3. Avoid planting smaller herbs/flowers that require full sun near lemongrass, as the tall blades give increased shading.

4. Trim lemongrass occasionally to promote growth.

5. Remove dead blades from lemon grass to decrease potential cause for disease or reduction in shoot production.

6. Wear gloves when handling a healthy lemongrass as the grass blades tend to cause thin cuts on the bare skin.

Summary:
Spearmint or mint in general is easy to care for with no special requirements, but can quickly cover an area if not maintained (Avoid planting directly in the ground!)

Keeping the plant trimmed and pinching off flowers will prolong the harvest of leaves.

Spearmint loves a moist soil, so mulching the ground will assist in maintaining cool/moist soil where the mint.
