Golden Bellapple or Passiflora Laurifolia is a sweet cousin to the passion fruit we all know and love. The skin for this fruit is more like a cushion and the pulp has sweet perfume notes and a bit tart when seeds are bitten.
PLANT CARE TIPS:
LIGHTING- Full Sun
SOIL - Loamy
WATERING - Occasionally (every few days to once a week)
CARE DIFFICULTY (1 to 5) - 1
BENEFITS - key nutrients and vitamins (C & B), rich in antioxidants, good fiber, low glycemic index (does not cause steep increase in blood sugar)
USES - eaten fresh, mixed in drinks
STARVING CRUCIAN TIPS/RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Caterpillars love these especially the small black ones, too many can destroy your plant but a few will assist in vigorous growth.
2. The flowers for the bell apple typically aim down as opposed to the passionfruit flowers which aim up when they open. These flowers have a much heavier perfume scent and you Weill typically smell them before you see them.
3. Pollinated by carpenter bees, just like the passion fruit normal honey bees are too small to pollinate and the black carpenter bees are helpful in pollination.
4. Many ways to propagate new plants but seeds are recommended after 4-5 years. As the plants gets older it becomes more susceptible to certain diseases. Average lifespan of passiflora plants is 7-10 years.
5. Plants will typically fruit 18-24 months, so no extended wait for fruit but time can be shortened with cuttings.
