The Accidental Foodie Foodie & Travel-addict. Join me as eat my way around the world and share my food adventures and recipes with you! I just always thought I liked to eat.

A little about me: I’m Chinese-American, was born in the US but spent nearly 7 years of my life in Shanghai with my husband and dog, and I am completely obsessed with food. It’s funny – I never set out to be a foodie, actually (hence the name of this blog). My mom is a fantastic cook. Growing up, I got spoiled by her cooking, and when I started living on my own, I wasn’t too thrilled at the prospe

ct of eating sub-par food. But like every other young adult at that age, I was too poor to eat out, so I started trying to cook for myself at home. While my first dishes weren’t Michelin-star status, they weren’t half bad, and after a while, what started out as an act of desperation quickly became a full-blown passion. What I find the most fascinating about food is how much you can learn from it, especially when you’re traveling. There’s nothing I love more than trying new foods while on the adventure of a lifetime, and then being able to bring that inspiration back to my own kitchen at a later time. Thanks for joining me on this journey into the blogosphere and I hope you enjoy what I have to offer – Bon Appétit!

Celebrated dad’s birthday at La Maison 1888 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Da Nang - the food, ambiance, and service definitely lived up to its reputation! They even surprised us with a piece of cake at the end with a candle for my dad and sang Happy Birthday. 🥹 A gorgeous meal from start to finish, my personal favorites were the caviar/smoked salmon and the truffle amuse bouches, the scallop carpaccio with yogurt and herb oil drops, the spherified gnocchi, and the fish course - simply delicious! 🥂

Congee, sometimes known as jook in Cantonese, is basically rice porridge and is often made or served with bits of meat like pork or fish and vegetables to make it a complete meal. In Ben Thanh market, we found a vendor who made the Vietnamese equivalent (chao) which made for a pleasant surprise and an excellent breakfast! 🥣

The 7 course meal and show at Kanell’s Restaurant on our last day in Siem Reap was such a treat - great food accompanied by wonderful Khmer music and cultural dances. Couldn’t have asked for a better final memory of Siem Reap! ❤️🇰🇭

I’m a total carb freak. I love bagels so much but one of the things I hate is having to go buy fresh bagels when I want one - then by the time you finish them you’re bageled out for a while. So I decided to try and make my own using the protein bagel recipe so I could have fresh bagels anytime I wanted to and the results have been overall… mixed. Until today! Look at her! She’s perfect, she’s a queen, crunchy on the outside and so fluffy and perfectly cooked on the inside! I think I’m finally on the right track! 😍

It’s been such a crazy year I haven’t even had time to really do what I love the most which is make little treats for my family and friends! I did manage to squeeze in these edible crystals that I’ve been wanting to try for forever - super fun & easy and a great activity if you have kids! 2 cups of sugar, 1 cup liquid (something like tea or water or shelf stable juice), and 2 teaspoons of Telephone brand agar agar powder - simmer the agar agar and liquid first for about a minute, then add in the sugar and continue to simmer for about 5-7 min. Then pour into an oiled tempered glass dish or silicone mould, let it set until firm and then start carving it into your creations! Let then dry at room temp for several days until it’s crunchy on the outside and gummy on the inside! Tips: there will be air bubbles if you use a silicone mould and I used liquid food coloring for some of them but don’t use more than a few drops or it will be a muddy mess like one of mine was!
