If you were a brown skin girl growing up in the 80s, you knew and loved Irene. We did the plastic hair combs to the side, the thick mini bangs the big picked out curly fro with barrettes, the halter top with feathers or tight shiny Gloria Vanderbilt jeans and bright red lipstick. So very Irene Cara. I would put her in the category of Black Latina genius like Angie Bofill and Disco royalty like Donna Summer.
I first laid my little Black girl eyes on Irene on Sesame Street and then in Roots and as Coco in my favorite film, Fame. It was her representation of the free wheeling, bohemian, quiet and creative Brown Skin woman that made me see her as unique and aspirational.
Many people don’t know that Irene’s music was stolen from her. And it is this theft of her talent and energy that sapped her. Evidently her fight to gain royalties and fair payment for her Oscar winning, chart topping music that she wrote and sang and performed, blacklisted her in Hollywood. Her struggles are not highly publicized as they fall into the category of how America has a history of erasing Black women, stealing our spirit. Irene is both joy and pain.

Every now and then i would Google her name to see what she might be up to. Hoping for her triumphant return. RIP Irene. You are so meaningful and missed. ❤️

Donta Rose’s achievement is so significant it could actually go unnoticed. Why? Well, if you didn’t realize that the Black community has no Black-owned major chain grocery stores,
you may not realize how important this is. Donta Rose, who is only 28 years-old and an engineering graduate from Morgan State, took out a “very large business loan” to buy ownership into one of the country’s largest discount grocery chains, Grocery Outlet. And he did it in his very own community in North Philly. To be clear, there are several small/
independent Black-owned groceries that have emerged recently in urban communities, but none that intersect with the large grocery chains that leverage our communities’ unique racially redlined demographics and concentrated buying power. Until now. Donta Rose has run the gauntlet and come out a risk taker with a real vision for a Philly community with numerous overlapping neighborhoods, both gentrified and (as i like to call it) “organic.”
My entire family is from Philly. Most still live in a city that is almost half Black and incredibly segregated. In many ways, it stays in turmoil. But, it has a wonderful Black history of success and transcendence. Donta Rose is now part of that history. Why?
Because food, it’s cost, it’s quality, it’s access and it’s location. Is at the very root of a community’s humanity. The ability to control this aspect of our own humanity to our own benefit is at the core of Black folk survival and life enjoyment. So, Donta Rose has taken a risk to succeed in a tough space where he is desperately needed.

Let’s give him the warmth of our good wishes and the gracious, hard-earned power of our community’s all mighty dollar. Long may the Grocery Outlet(s) of the young Donta Rose live.

What at first seemed like it was going to be a curiously hyped news piece about “protective” hair styling for the Summer, turned out to be a tour de force article anout Caribbean women entrepreneurs coming up strong in the beauty business. The market understanding, personal narrative shaping and fine-tuning of the skill sets we all learned as Black girls, has been taken to higher heights via these Black entrepreneurs. The piece highlights their grind. Take notes ‘cause we outchere 🤗

Right now, we’re not even playing with you. Coming up next week, we will be testing out deliveries of new flavors that you can’t pick up at any of our groceries.
This little thang right here, is all that sweet mango juiciness topped off with a goodly layer of flan. And then that is topped off on top of the top with dulce caramel. 😛 We will let you know when you can order this and other flavors when we start limited time deliveries early next month for end of Summer. The word for the day is “decoupage.” Lotus Scoop Production Lead and six-year veteran of our Brooklyn ship of joy, Mirian Diaz, and I decided to go a little crazy. We transformed our boring industrial front of shop floor into a Brooklyn Kaleidoscope with the work of Uber Creative and spirit Photographer @brooklynjuice. (Also known as Ace) 😎.
