Genetically Engineered Food - Say No "Be The change you want to see." SAY NO TO: Genetically Engineered food- Gene manipulation in our food system. This is called transgenesis.

Created in a laboratory-Classification: Genetic Engineering- Genetically Modified Organism - known as GMO. The desired “new genes” are deposited by invading the “plant cell.” If the plant cell does not accept the “new gene,” a viral promoter can be used to encourage activating and promoting the growth of the “new genes” within the plant cell. In essence, the plant cell did not understand where or

how an alien gene came from—so it reacts and tries to reject. This is the reaction from nature when biotech companies and their scientists tamper with nature! A genetically modified organism (GMO) is a plant, animal, or microorganism whose genetic code has been altered, subtracted, or added (either from the same species or a different species) to give it characteristics that it does not have naturally. Scientists can now transfer gene material between species that otherwise would be incapable of mating: for example, a goat and a spider. Little is known about the long-term effects of such manipulations on both humans and the environment. And while some see GMOs as the way to the future, others believe that scientists have gone too far, tinkering with the essence of life. The soybean is by far the worlds most cultivated transgenic plant, followed by corn, cotton, and canola. The United States, Argentina, Canada, and China, in that order, are the biggest producers. Different countries have adopted different approaches to the touchy topic of labeling GMOs. In Europe, the labeling of GMOs is obligatory, and caution prevails. When in doubt, do not purchase or consume. Products in Europe are labeled, and it is left to the consumer to make their choice. In Canada and the United States, the labeling of GMOs is optional.

Some good news! 🗞️ Syngenta, maker of a controversial ‘paraquat’ pesticide linked to Parkinson’s disease, said on Tuesday that it would stop making its paraquat w**d killer by the end of June.

‘The announcement comes as the company is facing several thousand lawsuits brought by people in the US who allege they developed Parkinson’s disease due to their exposure to Syngenta’s paraquat products.

The company did not mention the litigation in its announcement.

The announcement cites “significant competition” from generic producers of paraquat and a “less than 1 percent” contribution to the company’s global sales as reasons for exiting the paraquat business.

The company said it “affirms that paraquat is safe when used in line with registered label instructions”, and that paraquat remains “highly effective in controlling w**ds”.

Asked if the decision was due to the litigation, the company said it was a commercial decision and that it was not making further comments.

Michael Okun, director of the Fixel Institute at the University of Florida, who has called for a ban on paraquat, called the news a “public health milestone”.

“For decades we have warned that certain pesticides increase the risk of Parkinson’s and other serious diseases. This moment proves that advocacy, data and courage can change the trajectory of disease,” Okun said.

Paraquat has been used in the US since 1964 as a tool to kill broadleaf w**ds and grasses.

Though banned in several countries, including throughout Europe, Syngenta’s paraquat-based Gramoxone herbicide brand has remained popular with US farmers for use in growing soybeans, cotton and corn, as well as in growing grapes, pistachios, peanuts and many other crops.’

Next generation... A new wheat production system involving genetically modified (GMO) drought-tolerant wheat is moving closer to commercialization. On September 23, the Argentine company that developed the technology signed an agreement with the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation (CWRF) to introduce the crop in the United States.

“🌱 Interesting new study on pesticide levels in our fruits and veggies 🍎🥦. It highlights the ✅ ‘Clean 15’ with the lowest traces, all the way to the 🚫 ‘Dirty Dozen,’ the most contaminated produce.

Eating more pesticide-laced produce increases exposure to dozens of pesticides, according to a nonprofit that publishes the “Dirty Dozen” list of contaminated foods.
