✨Oslo Blair McIntyre✨ ⁣

After a whirlwind labour and spontaneous free birth, we welcomed this little man earth side in the comfort of our home. ⁣

His little personality is already fitting into our home and hearts so perfectly, it’s incredible to think we didn’t know his face before this week. ⁣

For the first time, winter can’t come soon enough. ⁣

The leaves are yellowing and the sweetest anticipation has followed with the changing seasons. ⁣

The pitter patter of toes will be louder, and children’s laughter will fill more space in our home. ⁣

This winter our wood heated stove will warm our home, but a baby boy will warm our souls. ⁣

We can’t wait to meet you little one. ✨ ⁣

If you were here when I said I’d never get pigs again, I can officially say I was very very wrong. ⁣

⁣⁣
Over the last two months, I’ve had the privilege of working along side a group of incredible and inspiring rural woman. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Each of us have written and captured either our favourite recipes, our dearest inspirations or our collective wisdom and placed it into this years spring issue of Homegrown. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
There is so much love and information packaged and placed into this source book I’m still in awe of how it has all come together. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I’ve perfected and written many recipes over the course of my homesteading journey and I chose to share a favourite lamb recipe as my contribution, and oh my goodness is it ever a good one. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I’ve placed the link to the Homegrown source book in my bio for those of you curiously looking or for those of you who have been patiently waiting to snag one! ⁣⁣
This will only be available for a short period of time and I couldn’t recommend it more! ⁣🌸

⁣⁣⁣
Braedon and I have been talking and dreaming about the farm for years. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
The first of many seasons was simply brush clearing and making way for a proper visual of our land. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
It wasn’t until this spring that we began putting puzzle pieces together. I mean the big game changing puzzle pieces. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
One of the pieces… we officially have an orchard! ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
One with enough fruit trees to offer U-pick within the next couple years. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
We have twelve cherry trees, ten apple trees and two plum trees. ⁣⁣⁣
We’re hoping by next year we will also have peach and pear trees. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
It has been so much work. On top of prepping for pigs, our garden and the blueberry field were also planting it has been quite the month! ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Little by little, season by season.. it’s all coming together, finally. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣
After spending a week putting up fencing, clearing, limbing and building, our new piggies are happily at home. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Six pigs in total. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It feels so nice having pigs again, even though I said I wouldn’t do pigs ever ever again. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The benefits of nose tilling, soil fertilization etc out weight all the negatives. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I will say however, the last time we did pigs we weren’t prepared at all and it made a big impact on every perspective I originally had. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣
I think the biggest misconception I had before I started homeschooling was that book work needed to be done daily, each morning needed a routine and that I would fail without a flawless curriculum. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Was I ever wrong. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The concept of perfection is how I was failing my children and hindering the twinkle they already had for learning. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We might go days without reading books, math work, spelling etc… ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It was so easy to forget there is learning else where and outside of our kitchen table. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Math for the morning could simply be counting eggs and figuring out the number of eggs needing to be cracked if each of us want two eggs for breakfast. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
They know the difference between wild strawberries vs wild blueberries and so on, because I’ve learnt to lean into hands on learning far more than I do with curriculum. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
On days they want to do math, we will catch up on a weeks worth of information simply because they feel driven and inspired. It’s the same with other lessons as well. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
As they grow, I’m sure learning will change as life changes… but for now… this is homeschooling. ⁣⁣

I realized today, that I haven’t formally announced the new animals we brought to the farm last week… and something else very near and dear! ⁣

We officially have black belly sheep! ⁣
Although they are haired sheep as opposed to the woollies we also have, they will be our main source of homegrown lamb and are a meat exclusive breed. ⁣

I’m also so excited to announce I will be sharing one of my family favourite, lamb recipes in this years spring issue of The Homegrown Source Book! ⁣

Being a contributor along side so many inspiring woman has been such a incredible experience. You can expect some sneak peaks before the official release at the end of the month! ⁣

Just like that, another year has passed and another child is a year older. ⁣

Happy fifth my sweet Athena!🌸🌸🌸⁣

Although you were my second child, you were my first home birth and the child I reclaimed my sacred womanhood with. ⁣

Your soul came so quickly into this world, I never had a moment to doubt my body.⁣

I was forced to form friendships with each surge as they furiously came without warning. ⁣

But then there you were. ⁣

The calm after the storm. ⁣

You taught me what true inner strength is, and to carry my heart on my sleeve. ⁣

You’ve taught me to talk openly and for what I believe in. ⁣

And you show me everyday what it truly is, to love unconditionally. ⁣

Happy birthday my old and wise little soul, thank you for choosing me to be your mama🌸 ⁣

Love doesn’t keep a soul alive. ⁣
I wish it did, but that isn’t the truth. ⁣

This little guy was born after a long labour and struggled to get going. ⁣
The following day I ran him inside and pulled him back as hypothermia almost took him. ⁣
I milked my ewe and fought her kicking me as I calmed her down and got the colostrum I needed. ⁣
I had to knit this sweet little soul a sweater to keep him warm. ⁣
I had to hold his mom still while she got used to him head butting her udder. ⁣
I had to hold his mouth open and spray milk into his mouth to encourage a proper feeding after days of syringe feeds. ⁣

The lists of things feels endless. ⁣

After him being outside for several days and only alive for a long hard week… he is no longer here. ⁣

I’ve tip toed over words for the last week, and held back so many tears. ⁣

After the longest week of our life, we had to say goodbye to our little friend who had already made such a impact on our farmstead. ⁣

This month has been wildly busy. ⁣

Between lambing, getting a cold, hand washing clothes due to well issues and hand washing dishes, kitchen renovations and prepping for chicks to arrive it’s been a lot. ⁣

I’m finally feeling winter moving it’s way out and even though we’re getting the odd sprinkle of snow, spring is quickly approaching. ⁣

So one last snow ice cream bowl for us as we know we probably won’t have another for quite sometime! ⁣

⁣One last picture of the snow, before this account becomes lamb pictures exclusively! ⁣⁣Kidding, obviously… maybe. ⁣

Oh, sourdough. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The ever forgiving and always forgotten bread. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The amount of times I’ve crawled out of bed to realize I left my dough proofing under the wood stove is countless. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
At least it still looks pretty and nine out of ten times it’s still edible. ⁣⁣

Over the last month or so I’ve watched the wool on the back of one of my ewes slowly flatten, fluff and then flatten again. ⁣

I kind of just assumed it was the hay feeder rubbing gently, or frozen wool breaking from the ewe rubbing on trees. ⁣

Well… I finally figured out the cause. ⁣

It wasn’t the hay feeder and it wasn’t from rubbing on trees. ⁣

My little Winni cat has made a bestie and has spent cold nights snuggled up in the warm wool resting on my ewes back… kneading and massaging the wool down into the perfect placement for her bed. ⁣

The most adorable friendship that I hope lasts a lifetime. ⁣

This lifestyle has given us many firsts. ⁣
Our first farm eggs, ⁣
Our first butcher, ⁣
Our first animal birth etc. ⁣

The fact we continue having firsts, together as a family is the part I’m treasuring the deepest. ⁣

This isn’t my farm, it’s OUR farm. ⁣

Today the girls and I swallowed frozen liver together for the first time. ⁣

Today we also ate beef tongue together as a family. ⁣

We made the best tacos I’ve ever had in my life, wrapped in homemade tortillas. ⁣

First beef tongue, definitely not the last. ⁣

Kitchen renovations feel like they’ve lasted a lifetime.⁣

In reality I wanted them done yesterday, but that isn’t real life or realistic. ⁣

Whenever you see renovations happening online, it takes a reel of time to start and finish. ⁣

There isn’t conversation over cost, ⁣
There isn’t conversation over money saving, ⁣
There isn’t a conversation at all… it’s just finished. ⁣

Our reality is, we want to finish our kitchen in a week, because we can’t afford too. ⁣

This wasn’t planned and we didn’t budget for it. ⁣

When Braedon was working away we grabbed windows off of Facebook market place because we knew it would happen one day, but not like this. ⁣

We wanted to save for a propane stove and we never anticipated loosing our dishwasher to mice. ⁣

So here we are, somewhat paused in the middle of a forced Reno because we need to wait for a stove to fit the space we need and a second hand dishwasher. ⁣
And that’s okay. ⁣
It’s reality. ⁣

Most don’t talk about the finances that come with building or renovations, but they are there sitting in the middle of it all. ⁣

I guess I’m sharing this to normalize not having it all together, all the time… and that’s ok. ⁣

We got our window in this week, we don’t have cabinets or a dishwasher. ⁣

We’ve got our stove hooked up and only our island to work with… and we’re figuring it out as we go. ⁣

This is life. ⁣

Learning to work with the punches and be okay with the out come. ⁣

Oh and this is the view we are lucky enough to have while cooking from now on. ⁣

It’s the little things. ⁣

Squish your dates with a fork onto a baking tray…then drizzle peanut butter and melted chocolate on top, then freeze. ⁣⁣

So here’s what we do. ⁣⁣

This week has been… interesting. ⁣

We started noticing a weird smell coming from our dishwasher, then suddenly it was a pungent make you sick to your stomach smell I’ve never experienced in my life. ⁣

Well, it turns out a little family of mice had made a cozy abode in and around our dishwasher.⁣

Super gross. 🤢⁣

There’s a little more than sparkles and butterflies to living rural, but often when the gross gritty things are talked about it isn’t mice poo and home contamination that can come with living in the woods… if even talked about at all. ⁣

I’m writing this as my kitchen is half torn apart and forced renovations are underway. ⁣

I’m trying to be thankful it happened this way and pushed us to get things done before spring craziness began, but I don’t think I was quite ready for this. ⁣

Time to clean the house top to bottom.

⁣⁣
I was sitting on my couch, listening to the distant yelling and laughter of my girls outside. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It had been a hard week, not necessarily because life was busy, but because it wasn’t. The clouds blocked the sun and the cold air quickly leaking through the floor boards and window frames, somehow quicker than the wood stove could heat the cabin. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
My eyes analyzed the muddy walls, the dusty corners and finger printed mirrors while the steam from my tea scorched my upper lip. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Is this truly when we’re supposed to slow down? Or when we’re supposed to catch up? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The trees leaves fall, then they rest. ⁣⁣
The bears fill their bellies, then they sleep. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Here I was attempting to slow down but my eyes were seamlessly picking up little notes for my to do list. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
“I’ll do it now so when It’s busy season, I won’t be swamped”… is muttered over and over. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Here’s the reminder I needed in that moment. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We can’t do it all, and we shouldn’t. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Let the finger prints soak a little deeper into the porous walls, ⁣⁣
let the tooth paste splatter sit an extra hour on the bathroom mirror, ⁣⁣
And let the snow covered boots leave little melting streams around your house. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Take this time and bask in the slowness. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Our souls need seasons as deeply as the earth does. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣

⁣⁣
It’s been a minute since I gave farm updates… so here we go. ⁣

As of this Sunday, we rehomed our very last goat on the farm and have begun saving for a dairy cow. I’m not entirely sure when we will bring a cow home, but it won’t be until fencing and a barn is up. ⁣

About two months ago we butchered our very last rabbit and will be moving away from rabbits for the times being as we felt it was scattering our focus having so many little critters running around. ⁣

Currently we have the smallest amount of animals we’ve had since starting the farm and are re-establishing what brings us joy and what helps contribute to costs of the farm.⁣

As of right now we have four sheep, a handful of dogs and a bigger handful of cats.⁣
We currently have two ewes that are suspected pregnant and due to lamb this February. ⁣

This spring our main focus will be gardening, canning and creating space in our small cabin to store food for winter, building a barn, digging a root cellar and continuing renovations on our home. ⁣
If I have it my way that list will also include a milk cow, haha. ⁣

I’m trying to enjoy the last of winter, but with the never ending lists I’m itching to get it all happening!!! Fingers and toes crossed we manage to get it all done! ⁣

⁣⁣
Merry Christmas my dear friends!🎄⁣
⁣⁣
Believe it or not this picture was taken while we were all sick with the flu several weeks ago. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Aurora was rocking a high fever but my mom was leaving for Australia and needed a family picture to show my grandparents, and like my true self, I left it until the morning her flight left to get my act and together. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Fevers, a chicken, a kitten and three kids later … we managed a family photo for the first time since BEFORE Aurora was earth side. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I’d say it was worth it. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And note to self, don’t wait until your kids are sick to take family pictures… you can only tell your kids so many times to “look happy” before their smiles seem forced, haha. ⁣⁣
