Swarming is the process by which a new honey bee colony is formed when the queen bee leaves the colony with a large group of worker bees. Swarming is a honey bee colony's natural means of reproduction. The swarm of bees will then congregate in an area and create a large ball of bees around their queen as scout bees search for a new place to take up residence. Once they find a suitable tree cavity or more likely a hollow space in the side of a house or other structure they start building a new hive in that space.
If you encounter a swarm please do not call an exterminator or spray them with pesticide. Honeybee swarms are a gift of nature and are simply looking for a new place to live. Please contact a local beekeeper or your County Extension Agency to find someone who will relocate the swarm for you.

Beekeeping Journey

The Beginning

I have had an interest in keeping bees since 2015 after going to my first field day. However, it was not until the winter of 2018 that I purchased my first beekeeping equipment. In the Spring of 2019 I had my first colony. I have been able to manage the first two colonies and over winter them, then added two addition purchased colonies and three caught swarms in the spring of 2020. I extracted a couple frames of Honey for the first time with my homemade extractor in the Fall of 2019 and selling the first jar in June of 2020 during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The Help

The 2 Kids enjoy learning all about bees as we watch instructional videos from YouTube University on a regular basis. They have been begging us to purchase them beekeeping suits so they can go to the Apiary to help. Extracting the Honey has given them hands-on experience with the operation. They have became the number 1 sellers and have been involved in delivering the majority of the finished product. All of the income has been given to them as this helps teach them work ethic and how to earn income.
