Let me be honest with you. The thought of keeping bees used to send shivers down my spine.

Not the quiet, manageable kind of nervousness that you push through easily. Real, genuine fear. Bees sting. They move in thousands. They do not negotiate. And here I was considering inviting them onto my farm, into boxes I would have to open with my own hands.

For a while, that fear was enough to keep me exactly where I was — thinking, but not starting.

I used to wonder why my partner kept telling me I didn’t know how to take a proper bath. She said it for over five years, but I always ignored her. I figured I’d been bathing for almost 29 years, so I must know what I’m doing.

But this morning, while getting ready for a presentation, the truth finally hit me. Let me take you back a little. Every Sunday and Monday mornings, I would notice that I smelled like smoke. My weekends are always spent in apiaries, and the smoke sticks around long after I’m done. I remember one particular Monday when I had to attend an interview alongside my boss — and there I was, smelling of smoke. I told myself then, this has to be the last time.

From that day on, I started taking my showers more seriously. And mysteriously, the smoke smell disappeared. Now, every time I return from the farm in the morning, I’m free of that lingering smoke odor.

Reflecting on it, I’ve come to realize something humbling: kumbe my woman was right all along.

For a long while, I neglected my bees.

Life kept happening. Each time I meant to inspect the hives, clear bushes, or check on the farm, time slipped away. Days became weeks, weeks months, and a year and a half passed. The path to the apiary overgrew. The forest reclaimed our clearings.

Finally, I found the strength and time to return. Panga and brush cutter in hand, I carved a path through stubborn bushes. I cleared around the hives, breathing life back into the apiary.

It was deeply fulfilling. The work was simple, just cutting overgrown grass and weeds, but the joy ran deep. My soul had longed for it. It felt like reconnecting not just with my bees, but also with a part of myself I had ignored.

Over and over, beekeeping has taught me that neglect creates silence, but attention brings life.
