In aquaculture, there are different ways to manipulate fish feedstuffs and still achieve nice results. The concept of crude protein and ideal protein has made it difficult for farmers to produce highly nutritious fish feed due to a low level of information. For any fish being cultured artificially to thrive and grow healthy in its environment, there must be adequate, well-designed, and produced fish feed for the fish to feed. However, the problem of understanding between crude protein and the ideal protein has become the 'big deal' in fish feed production. Stay with me as I take you to the rudimentary of crude protein and ideal protein. Crude protein entails the summation of all the percentage of individual ingredients of either animal protein or plant protein that constitutes the entire component of the feed. E.g., feed that contains 35% crude protein implies that both the animal protein or plant protein, including some basal ingredients, are considered as crude protein. Another concept is ideal protein (the amino acids). Ideal protein shows the exact individual percentage of amino acids, most especially essential amino acids, that make up the whole feed. E.g., feed might contain 35% of different ingredients put together, but individually, the percentages might be different. It is the percentage of inclusion during feed formulation that is referred to as ideal protein. Note: Ideal protein is not the same as percentage protein utilization. PPU is the percentage at which a particular fish ingredient is utilized by the fish or contributed to the fish. The ideal protein content shows the relationship between feed inclusion and feeding rate of fish and its nutritional requirements. A feed might contain 35% crude protein, while another feed might contain 25% to 30% crude protein and will do marvelously well than the feed with 35% crude protein, this is because the nutritional requirements of the species of fish to be cultured are considered, and the knowledge of fish nutrition is never exempted. Is Crude Protein the Same as Ideal Protein?

No – they are not the same.
They both talk about protein in fish feed, but they look at protein in different ways.

1. Crude Protein – "The Big Number"

Think of crude protein as just the total amount of protein in the feed.

It’s measured by looking at the nitrogen inside the feed (since protein has nitrogen).

Example: If your feed label says 35% crude protein, it means there’s a lot of protein in there – but it does not tell you if that protein is the right kind for your fish.

👉 Problem: Two feeds can have the same crude protein %, but one may help your fish grow well, and the other may not. Why? Because not all proteins are equal.

2. Ideal Protein – "The Right Balance"

Fish don’t really need "protein" as a whole – they need the building blocks of protein called amino acids.

Some amino acids are "essential" – fish cannot make them, so they must come from the feed (like lysine, methionine, threonine).

Ideal protein means giving fish the correct balance of these amino acids.

👉 Example:
Imagine building a house. You need bricks, cement, sand, and iron rods in the right amounts. If you only have bricks (lots of crude protein) but no cement or rods (missing amino acids), you cannot build a strong house.

Why This Matters for Farmers

Crude protein tells you how much protein is there.

Ideal protein tells you if it’s the right type of protein for growth.
Feeding only based on crude protein may cause:
Wasted feed (fish cannot use all the protein).
Pollution (extra nitrogen released into water).
Higher costs (you pay for protein that fish don’t fully use).

But when feed is balanced for ideal protein, fish grow faster, feed is used more efficiently, and you save money in the long run.

2. Adults: Primarily herbivorous, feeding on phytoplankton, periphyton, and decaying organic matter.
3. Classified as a column feeder, feeding mainly in the mid-water zone.

Reproduction & Breeding
1. Naturally breeds during the monsoon season in flooded rivers.
2. In aquaculture, induced breeding is practiced using hormonal injections (commonly Ovaprim or pituitary extracts).
3. Eggs are semi-buoyant, and fertilization is external.

Aquaculture Importance

1. Rohu is one of the “Indian Major Carps” (alongside Catla and Mrigal).
2. Highly valued in aquaculture due to:
