McChick Hatchery We established/operated the first hatchery in Maine in 2021 until the Fall of 2025. Thank you for your support ❤️

I have been trying to think of what to share for my last post…. This has been extremely hard to say the least.

For the last few weeks, we have had to breakdown everything that we had built as we prepare for the sale of our farm/ business. We have emptied the barns of birds, cages, and equipment. I had cut myself in the process, when I looked down I saw not just blood but a heart on the tissue. I took the heart as an affirmation that I am on the right path with my decision.

For me, a silent barn is not an ending but a pause. Farm life is a cycle of beginnings and endings. The silence serves as an opportunity for reflection and gratitude, a moment to appreciate the lessons learned and for the time spent with the animals. It's a place where laughter, hard work, grief, and love once existed, and these emotions now linger in the quiet. The emptiness is a reminder that I can always return to farming someday where my barns will be filled again with new animals and new beginnings.

I thank everyone who has purchased from McChicks, been to our farm, and have met me (and my husband) personally. Your business and support over the last four years has given me strength and inner-peace with living out a childhood dream, being able to overcome the doubts and second-guessing with changing careers….building McChicks has been the most amazing and rewarding time of my life.

For those who I have inspired over the years, I will say continue to follow your dreams and passions no matter how challenging it may be because in the end it is worth it! We only get one life and this life is too short as it is.
Look for those little (heart) signs of your own and follow them. ❤️

(Also, the pigs and the goats have found a wonderful home all together.)

Much love to you, your family and your flocks.

MONK UPDATE:

Monk and I always had a no touch policy - I don’t touch him, he doesn’t touch me….

….I turned around and saw that Kylie was holding Monk…. 🙂‍↔️😳🤔

“Monk, you mother clucker!” 😤🫣😂

Just kidding - Monk has always been a good boy, who would tolerate my humorous videos. 💗 he has found a loving home in Harrison as a “house chicken”….🤦‍♀️ that bird is going to live a good life.

The good news is: Monk’s new mom is a friend who has agreed to let me visit and make more Monk videos! 🤗

I am truly happy to have found homes for all my birds, goats and piggies- thank you everyone for your help.❤️

The “Bachelor Pad” is headed off today to their new home - so I officially will have any birds (other than the reserved meat bird chicks awaiting pick up). BTW, I will let you know if there are any unclaimed Freedom Rangers meat chicks.

EDIT: I am still trying to juggle tons of things. With the recent setback selling, mentally, physically and most of all emotionally I am overwhelmed with the amount of rehoming offers/messages. If someone wants to purchase our property with keeping the hatchery going - obviously they will be my top choice as they will continue my legacy and would still be able to provide you all with quality birds. (Tonight, had a lovely unexpected visit with a gentleman who expressed interest in our property and the hatchery. 🤞🏻) I am sorry but I am not replying tonight to any messages as I am hopeful this is not the end.

Life is inherently unpredictable, and it's rare for things to unfold exactly as we envision them. With that said, our house is back on the market along with my hopes and dreams for the hatchery to continue slowly fading. My heart is heavy as I am needing to rehome ALL of our animals (chickens, pigs and goats).

Today surprisingly has been a day of internal self reflection.

I truly cannot ever express enough my upmost appreciation, respect combined with a humbling experience of those who have never met me personally who have reached out to me wanting to help in anyway they can - cleaning pens, etc.

THIS is what our “chicken” community (or any community for that matter) should be about from neighbors, friends and loyal customers - supporting each other. I will never be able to thank you all enough for the kindness, support and compassion/understanding especially during this difficult time. You have all helped give me strength in my time of need and I am forever grateful! Thank you!

Honestly, we need more of this compassion for humanity in our daily lives! 💗 You all are helping me get through this challenging time. Personally over the last four years, I have brought McChick’s to a certain level of respect in the chicken world, and I feel the new owners (and I) can bring McChick’s to the next level! Honestly, you all mean the world to me as this is a business built on a dream to help New Englanders be more self sufficient by providing quality healthy chickens raised with love and compassion. I have put my heart and soul into something that I believe in and have been recently shown that I have made a significant impact on my customers/friends - with no judgement, using me as a resource for questions or concerns as we all started farming somewhere. I am still learning things….. so you are not alone.

Thank you. Let me know what breed I raise that you want me to help you determine its gender (sexing).

Update on the farm.

Well my friends, our home/farm went under contract yesterday. The potential new owners are an amazing couple who wish to continue with the hatchery (along with keeping the goats and pigs).

I am excited for the future of the business (not sure if they will keep the McChick brand). And…. they have asked for me to mentor them to provide the same level of quality chickens to our customers. So, I will still get to visit the animals occasionally and hopefully run in to some of my dedicated followers. 🤗

I do know that the new owners will continue to love the property and animals just as much as we have.

To know that my vision in creating a hatchery has become successful, it will continue to grow and develop into so much more. For the future - there is potential for shipping chicks, offering more breeds, putting yurts out so people can come and experience farming. I am excited to see where the new owners take it!

From the beginning, my goal was to support farming by providing Mainers with a local source for poultry. Over four years, our “McChick family” (all who have ordered birds from us) has spread across state lines throughout New England. Hopefully my story will inspire others to follow their dreams and keeping the soul of farming alive. My heart is full! 💗
