A great day with Dorset Young Farmers 👏
The judge made their way farm to farm, and we were pleased to have here using some of our Longhorns 🐂 Five members including my niece on the farm, all putting in a great effort with some brilliant stockmanship on show.

Now we wait… results next weekend at the County Rally 🤞

We’ve had a busy day on the farm with some of Gillingham & Shaftesbury Young Farmers including my niece getting stuck in with our Longhorn cattle! 🐂 Today was all about prep, washing, training, and learning the ropes ready for tomorrow’s beef calf show.
Watching them work hard and grow in confidence with the cattle was brilliant. Tomorrow, they’ll be showing off their skills and I’m sure the Longhorns will shine! Stay tuned for some proud moments tomorrow!

A pretty special one for us today… our first Konik foal has arrived 🐴✨
Born out on the grass this morning, up and away in no time and straight on the milk bar, exactly what you want to see.
Koniks aren’t native here, but they’re about as close as you get to the original European wild horse the Tarpan and you can really see it in them. Tough, simple and built to live out.
Looking forward to watching this one grow and, in time, play its part out on the conservation sites 🌱

A nice job this evening moving this group of cows off the SSSI at Lyscombe Nature Reserve and into the field ready for TB testing and the start of calving towards the end of March.
It’s always a satisfying sound walking through a field of contented cattle, hearing them quietly munching away at fresh grass. After a long winter it finally feels like spring is arriving, and the grass has really started to grow over the last couple of weeks.
The cows certainly seem to appreciate it – heads down and making the most of it.
Not long now until calving starts. 🌱🐄

Winter grazing matters ❄️🌾🌿🌱☘️
It’s important not to remove all grazing animals in winter. All our Longhorn breeding females and many of our youngstock stay out all year round, mostly without any supplementary feeding. Year-round, extensive grazing helps maintain a diverse sward structure, prevents scrub and rank grass build-up, recycles nutrients naturally, and creates disturbed ground for new plants to establish, along with dung that is essential for invertebrates and the species that rely on them.
The British countryside evolved with livestock on the land all year round. 🐄🐎🌱

A lovely heifer calf born today — always a special sight .

We’re working towards becoming an all spring-calving herd, but while we’ve been growing cow numbers, we’ve been serving cows to calve whenever they’re ready. It won’t be long before everything is timed for the spring, but for now, we’ll happily take new arrivals whenever they come!🐂
