Most wineries pair their wine with food. LXV pairs theirs with spice.

Kunal Lall and Neeta Mittal founded LXV in Paso Robles with a simple idea no one else on Sommsation does. Each wine ships with a paired Indian spice. Petite Sirah with saffron. Syrah with cardamom.

The wines hold up on their own. The spice is the next conversation.

A second celebration in our AAPI Heritage Month series 🍷

This week, Archetype12 from Oregon. Wines built around characters, drawn from a twelve-archetype lineup. The Hero, a 2024 Pinot Noir with stewed summer raspberries, baking spice, and a commanding finish. The Sovereign, a 2021 Mourvèdre from Red Mountain that holds court. The Magician, a 2025 Blanc Noir made from Pinot Noir grapes treated like a white wine, barrel-aged at Hidden Pond Farm.

Jason Werner builds each one around a different ethos. Twelve archetypes, pouring all week.

Today is International Day of Families in the month of AAPI Heritage month and we're currently spending it with Yao Family Wines.

Dikembe Mutombo started taking Yao Ming out for steak in the early 2010s, those dinners came with bottles of Napa Cabernet. Yao retired from the NBA, the following year of November 2011 and announced Yao Family Wines in St. Helena the same month.

Robert Parker has called the Cabernets "actually brilliant." Every vintage since the first has cleared 90 points. The 2010 Family Reserve scored 98.

In Yao's words: "Each bottle of wine shared with loved ones becomes a forever memory."

This month we're highlighting founders, chosen wine on their own terms. Celebrate AAPI with us.

A love letter, in bottles. Meet Oxlee Graham, named after two grandmothers

When Jennie Murphy launched her own label in 2022, she named it for Elinor Oxlee and Mabel Graham. Every cuvée carries another woman's name. On Sunday, May 31, she's pouring two of her firsts live with Sommsation sommelier Hugo Arias.

Margaret's Albariño from the Russian River Valley, a grape almost no one grows there. Dayle's Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast, the proof of her beautiful winemaking.

Food and Wine called Oxlee Graham one of the 15 New California Wineries You Need to Know in 2025.
Sunday, May 31. 4 PT / 7 ET. 90 minutes on Zoom. $99 includes both bottles and shipping. Seats close May 22.

By official proclamation: Mom is Off Duty Sunday, May 10.

For twenty-four hours, no lost keys, no dinner decisions, no managing anyone but herself. Just a comfortable chair, a quiet afternoon, and a glass that someone else poured.

Our sommeliers picked Breathless to keep her company. The Two Bottle Gift Pack pairs the 2020 Organic Blanc de Blancs with the NV Brut Rosé, both méthode champenoise, both made by hand by sisters who took over the family vineyard.

More somm-curated bundles waiting at sommsation.com. Order this week to receive before Mother's Day.

The name means deer.

In 1972, Doyle Hinman helped plant one of Oregon's first Pinot vineyards after studying winemaking in Geisenheim, Germany. Fifty years later, his daughter Chelsea Hinman Miller took the family's Willamette Valley legacy and made it her own - a small Eugene label called Tior, the old German word for deer, after the woods her father trained in.

Chelsea joins us live on Saturday, May 16 for our next Saturday Session. Two bottles arrive at your door - a 2024 Pinot Gris and a 2023 Pinot Noir - and we pour them together with our lead sommelier Hugo Arias. Ninety minutes, side by side. LIVE Certified, Salmon Safe, female-founded.

A quick guide to how wine can be grown.

Sustainable farming reduces what the vineyard takes. Organic removes what doesn't belong. Biodynamic treats the vineyard as a living ecosystem. Regenerative aims to give more back to the soil than it borrowed.

No single approach makes a wine "good." Great winemaking is a mosaic of choices, shaped by climate, land, and philosophy.

On Earth Day, we're tipping our glasses to the growers in our collection who are pushing these practices forward, and to every winemaker thinking carefully about what happens in the vineyard.

The dirt comes first.

Phil Coturri has been farming the rocky hillsides of Sonoma organically for over 40 years. Before organic viticulture had a marketing category. Before it was a selling point on a back label. He just believed the land was the wine, and he farmed accordingly.

Winery Sixteen 600 is built on that conviction. Native yeasts, because the vineyard has earned them. No synthetic inputs, because the vines don't need them. Biodynamic practices that treat the Rossi Ranch as a living system, not a production line. The result is Zinfandel, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and a rare Rhone white that taste exactly like where they come from.

That's the whole point.

Sixteen 600 is this week's Winery of the Week. 20% off through April 27 at Sommsation.com

Happy World Malbec Day!

Do you spot the magenta rim? Malbec’s signature neon glow comes from its incredibly high anthocyanin content. While other varietals might surrender their pigment at the edges, Malbec holds onto that vibrant violet-pink hue right to the rim. It’s a testament to the thick skins developed in high-altitude vineyards.

The word "sustainable" gets used a lot. Here's what it actually looks like in practice.

Michel Schlumberger built a solar array that powers their entire estate, offsetting more than 5,000 tons of carbon in the process. Mount Langi Ghiran runs precision sensors through the vineyard so irrigation only happens when the vines actually need it. Clif Family stripped the bottle down. Lighter glass, no foil capsule.
The packaging shouldn't cost the planet more than the wine is worth.

Three producers. Three different ways of taking the same thing seriously.

This is what we look for when we bring a winery onto the platform. Not the certification. The commitment. There are more producers farming and making wine this way at sommsation.com. This month felt like the right time to introduce a few of them.

Piedmont is red wine country. Marco and Alberto Cane didn't get that memo. 🍾

Their father spent decades as one of the Langhe's most respected enologists. When the estate passed to his sons, they took everything he taught them and made bubbles instead. 30,000 bottles a year. A traditional wooden press, one of the only ones in Italy. No filtration, no clarification, no added sulfites.

The result is the kind of sparkling wine that doesn't need a occasion to justify opening it.

Marcalberto is this week's Winery of the Week. 20% off through April 20. Visit sommsation.com.
