Top up your drinking w**e stocks at home with three impressive white Italian w**es, all from different varieties that continue to impress at Atlas - one of which, the Vermentino, was selected to be served at our buying manager’s wedding!

// 2021 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, Podium, Garofoli

Without even considering the price, this is an exceptional white w**e from the Marche, with its clean, fresh, vibrant style showing lemon, white peach and hints of apricot and almond that leads into a palate of silken texture with wonderful tension and pleasingly persistent grip. When the price is considered, this all becomes more astonishing. At a mere £130 per 6 bottle case in bond, this is a more interesting and pleasurable white than so many white w**es at this price level.

// 2022 Roero Arneis, Vietti

Arneis is a variety that is not particularly high in acidity…it is fresh, but tends to be in a softer, more rounded style. Some styles can lack expression, others are a little honeyed and lack a certain energy. However, if yields are restrained and if it is grown on the lighter, sand-over-limestone soils of Roero on the northern bank of the Tanaro opposite Alba in Piemonte, it can really deliver. This example from Vietti offers plenty of interest, surprising quality, and very good value for money. £105 per 6 bottle case in bond.

// 2022 Vermentino, Guerra e Pace, Oddovini

It is unusual to find Vermentino in Sicily, but this is a real stand-out. Vermentino offers a fleshy fruit with white peach, both pear and apple, some zesty green lime or grapefruit pith and citrus oils as well as a touch of bitterness. The best examples capture a mineral, stony character and finish with a mouthwatering, saline, marine note just as this exceptional example from Oddo Vini. £150 per 6 in bond.

Our fine w**e offers are different.

We are constantly on the lookout for interesting small parcels of carefully sourced w**es for current and future drinking. When our interest is piqued, we source a sample to taste together as a team so we can make our own decisions about quality and determine if we ourselves believe the w**e represents value in its category and as a w**e per se.

Traditional merchants, however, are often bound to their existing stocklist and ownership, and therefore their offers prioritise w**es in their stock over and above the best available w**es in the market.

Join us on Tuesday 1st October for an evening with Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers of McLaren Vale’s **e at newly-opened and highly acclaimed Basque restaurant .

The evening will consist of a vertical tasting of their Syrah, Grenache, and Syrah/Grenache blend paired to a fantastic three-course meal from the chefs at Ibai. Having just received excellent scores in 2025 Halliday W**e Companion **ecompanion for their recent 2021 vintage, we could not be more excited to have the opportunity to host this evening alongside them. This is the first time that Toby and Emma have visited the UK since the pandemic, and we are looking forward to welcoming them back.

Our latest offer is the stunning newly released 2021 Chardonnay from Marlborough’s Dog Point Vineyard.

As Atlas’s MD Simon puts it, ‘In terms of Chardonnay of this quality at this price-point, it is a real stand-out’.

Based on plantings first made in the 1970s, Dog Point is an organic estate situated where the Brancott and Omaka Valleys meet to the west of Blenheim. Founded in 2004 by Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the name comes from the fact that when the earliest Europeans settled in the area and kept sheep, boundary riders used dogs to protect their flocks. Some of the dogs ventured off and bred in the wild, attacking flocks to survive. Long after the dogs were removed, the area kept the name of ‘Dog Point’.

The Chardonnay vines date back to 1981 and are grown on silty clay loam soils. Given the founders’ background and experience, it is no surprise that good Chardonnay clones were planted at the outset and cropping is kept low. The oak in Dog Point Chardonnay is never obtrusive, and is barely picked up on, instead it is the smoky mineral notes that add complexity to the fruit as well as that ‘struck match’ character that contributes to a particular Burgundian style.

Our latest offer is the 2020 I Sodi di San Niccolo from Castellare di Castellina, described by Antonio Galloni as ‘magical. This is remarkable in every day’, awarding it 97+ points.

This particular w**e caught our attention back in the 2013 vintage; we predicted great things for the estate. The 2016 seemed to confirm our initial belief, and now we have accessed a well-priced parcel of the 2020.

Atlas’ MD Simon once commented that it was ‘heartening to still be able to pick up a lesser-known w**e of similar calibre at a fraction of the price (of leading Tuscan Sangiovese)...but for how long will this be the case?’. A few years later, the same comment applies; it still ranks as a remarkably fairly priced Sangiovese, when judged against Pergole Torte, Flaccianello et al.

The blend is 85% Sangioveto (a synonym for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera and it makes for a head-turning w**e, showing all the ripeness you might expect in a strong Tuscan vintage, but none of the austerity that can typify young Sangiovese.
