We have tons of turmeric root ready to ship. Ecologically grown in our high tunnel, turmeric grows in zones 8-11, but can be grown in cooler climates with a greenhouse, or high tunnel. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory, and goes well in many Asian dishes. $10/lb for high quality root stock. We also sell the root for the same price, so if you order from the website and want Turmeric for eating, please specify in the notes. Both will grow, and are the same price, but the root stock will look unappetizing (but still edible).

Since we just finished harvesting the ginger and turmeric, lots of people have been asking about growing their own. Yes, its totally possible, and somewhat easy, and yes ours will definitely grow, in fact we sell some for that reason. Although you could go to the store and buy ginger and turmeric, most of the store sold products have been treated with chemicals to inhibit growth (for long shelf life mostly). Additionally, store bought may have disease, and may not be the healthiest to grow. We meticulously grow our soil so we can grow better things for our customers.
One thing to consider before you plant is that ginger and turmeric are tropical plants. They need a very long growing season to produce a good rhizome (the part you eat). We only grow ours in a high tunnel for this reason. We will plant in February and harvest in December. Without the full season the roots will be very small, so I suggest growing in pots that you can bring inside before the first frost. With a warm sunny window, you can continue to keep the plant thriving year round. My first time doing this it took me 2 years to get a full sized turmeric root, but it was fun.
If you want to buy some of ours to grow, or save the hassle and just eat something meticulously cared for, we have plenty in stock right now. Its $10/pound for ecologically grown ginger or turmeric (a pound will go a long way).
And yes, that's Anna standing amongst the turmeric in the high tunnel.

What is my favorite use of turmeric? I love making golden milk. Recipe:
A thumb sized piece of turmeric,
A dime sized piece of ginger,
A spoonful of raw honey,
1 tsp ground cinnamon,
12 ounces raw milk (if you cant get raw milk, or dont drink dairy, use your favorite milk subsitute)
Put the turmeric and ginger in the blender with a splash of milk and blend until there are no chunks bouncing around. Add a bit more milk and the cinnamon and honey, blend enough to mix, then add the rest of the milk and blend until smooth.
Turmeric has many benefits, including being a fantastic anti-inflammatory substitute to NSAID.

Looking to start your own backyard flock? I have some layer chicks available. They are Red Sex-Link (fancy term for a hen that can be identified by her color when she hatches). These are phenomenal brown egg layers. I am pricing them only a little bit more than I purchased them, $6 each.

Is organic more nutritious than conventional food? In short, no. Organic is more about what food shouldnt have in it (round-up, or other synthetically created chemicals). It would be nice if you could go into a store read a quick label, and know you are getting nutrient dense food, but unfortunately, our food system doesn't work like that.
The food we sell here on the farm is not meant to be categorized by labeling. We strive to grow the most nutrient dense foods possible, and do it while stewarding this planet. I want this patch of land I am on to be more fertile when I leave than when I got here.

What differentiates our eggs from others?
1) Transparent pricing. I charge $7 a dozen, and my profit margin is in the pennies. The cost to feed has doubled in the past year. Let this sink in a minute. I buy bulk feed from local farmers, and my cost is still that high. Next time you go buy eggs, dont ask why mine cost $7, ask why others cost so little. I have spent years lowering my input costs. The only way I could lower price is to lower quality.
2) Quality. My chickens are moved to fresh pasture every few days. They are always free to roam and never confined. The feed I give them is locally sourced, non-GMO, tested for traces of chemicals (like glyphosate). I dont compromise on quality to lower prices. Eggs are one of the most important foods to source responsibly.
3) Carbon footprint. Everything from feed, to delivery is done locally. The carbon footprint of these eggs is far lower than anything at the store.
4) They are basically a multi-vitamins in a shell. Confused why some studies say eggs are good, and others say they are bad for your health? Its all about how the chicken is raised and what they are fed.
Why do I keep pushing eggs if I am barely making money? Chickens are a key element in pasture management for the large herbivores here (cows and sheep). I also like watching the chickens clean up new sections of pasture. I also want others to enjoy good health. Does it matter if you buy store bought or eggs from my farm? If you only eat egg whites, you are probably fine with organic eggs from the store. If you consume the whole egg, you absolutely should source from a farm that raises like we do.

Season is starting to kick into gear. We have fresh eggs for sale, $7/doz. Also have honey and whole chicken in stock. Will start taking reservations for beef shares soon. Also, let us know if you want a whole lamb, or want pasture raised hair sheep. This year I would like to host a few limited space classes. PM me if interested. Topics I had in mind: intro-welding, hand tool woodworking, properly raised chickens, regenerative agriculture, treehouse design, etc

What do you do when a big storm takes down a huge straight black walnut tree perfect to saw into some boards, but you gotta get it to your property? You build a skidder attachment for the tractor. Its not pretty, but it was thrown together over my lunch break from scrap metal and cost about $8 to build (I already had the log tongs).

With all of the focus these days on specific dog breeds for specific tasks, I am amazed how this broken and discarded dog was able to be rehabilitated and is always willing to help out on the farm. He doesnt have any strong herding instincts, and I never specifically trained him, but he is eager to prove his worth. I ask him to help bring back this escaped calf, and he does it gently but firmly. A few days later I asked him over to help get some sheep, and he runs them back to their pasture.

New calf Friday! Its an Angus Jersey mix. Cool little fella.
