What's a wine speaker to do when he has a few hours in Portland, Oregon in between National Geographic Lindblad expeditions? COMPLETELY shift vinous gears and seek out fine Georgian juice at Portland's famed modern Eastern European / Russian eatery Kachka.

Delightfully crisp and minerally, this medium-bodied Royal Khvanchkara Tsolikouri 2021 evokes limes, white flowers, and a hint of nectarines. The fascinating grape variety is Tsolikouri (pronounced "Sol-li-kori"), which is an ancient white wine grape planted throughout the Imereti region of western Georgia.

Perfect with Kachka's scrumptious Siberian pelmeni (small dumplings with beef, pork, veal, and onion), house-cured pickled vegetables, and luscious bread and butter.

Fortunate to be AM-drinking as the special guest speaker on a National Geographic Lindblad expedition 🚢 on the Columbia River. I feel like a kid in a candy store with the array of beautiful wines from the Pacific Northwest. Here, from Washington State, Syncline Mourvèdre, medium-bodied but concentrated, with a seductive perfume of cassis, violets, and Mediterranean herbs. Pure and silky. 🙏
