Our Dahlia tuber store is finally open here at Dirt Road Wild Flower Farm. Some great prices on amazing gems if anyone is still looking to add more dahlias to their collection. Please read policies and shipping timelines so as to save frustration for that. I’ll be shipping over the next several weeks thru mid May in the order received. I’ve been growing dahlias for 10 years and selling for 5 and use extreme caution when planting, cutting, dividing, digging, etc. I hope you all have a beautiful Easter weekend.

Here’s another beautiful little ball dahlia. Irish Candy. Fun little dahlia with cute speckles of purple on the early blooms with a deep center and when temps cool she can be more of a blushy pink. I’m on year 2 and I think she’s a keeper.

We can never plan how most things are going to go. There are things that happen we have no control over. That is how our Winter went.

We lost our precious house cat Elsa. Then mid-February the sweetest horse we had got colic and after a tireless weekend we could not save her and the last weekend in Feb. while planning to have a whole 8 day staycation home by myself dividing tuber clumps my hubby landed in the ER overnight and not on the ice fishing trip as planned. That next morning I was injured by a horse. Literally smacked in the face by her face😵‍💫🥴it hurt like I can’t even explain. A split second nightmare. A few days later when swelling subsided some I realized something was just not right. I should have gotten checked while I was at the ER picking the hubs up but it was so busy and I could see😆Unfortunately the ct scan showed serious damage, a broken orbital bone down thru the cheek, lots of debri in the nasal, fractures, etc. I had a numb jaw and teeth so I knew something was definitely wrong and my cheek was depressed. It was priority to try and get surgery. I had to wait another whole week😬thankful someone cancelled their appt. due to bad weather. It has been a long recovery, a bone was pinching a nerve for quite some time so that has to heal and I’m still numb but hopefully on the mend.

I have met some of the most amazing thoughtful friends in these squares, flower friends have big hearts. The timing of it all had me stressed, it’s such a busy time for flower growers. Thank You for prayers and offers to help! I’ve just worked at it on my own recovery schedule. Some days I just wanted to sleep. I don’t wish anyone to get hit in the face, it’s quite painful. My daughter was kicked in the face by a horse nearly 5 years ago, we can’t win, we both have been injured in the face and realize we are so lucky. Still love horses though.

The question I’ve gotten from all my sweet peeps out there is am I having a tuber sale? That’s a YES! Tuesday evening, April 25th, 8 p.m. CST. It’s happening.

The most amazing sunset and orange dahlias showing off just a week before the fairly early frost for us last fall. What’s your favorite cutting orange dahlia? For me it’s Camano Buz. Strong long stiff stems and one of the first oranges to bloom. Such a reliable beauty to have on a cut flower farm.

I planted 2 glorious rows of Cameo Peach this season😉which hopefully means more to share soon. She can start out on the brighter pink side for a few days depending on temps but those second blooms really lighten up and are such a delight to the eye on a soft sunset evening. She can really throw her softer pinks and yellows just a few short weeks into blooming and becomes crazy floriferous and you can’t keep up with cutting. If you grew her this year, tell me how she did for you and if not, is she on your list for next season?

“Dahlia Tuber Store Opening” Hey you all, just letting you know we are opening the tuber store this evening at 6:30 P.M. CT. We will close around 3 P.M. to load inventory. I have my sweet daughter helping from afar with the opening and closing. Ha, thank goodness. She’s a busy girl with photography on weekends and her job too. Thank you all for kindly patiently waiting, honestly there never seems to be a right time. Something new comes up daily. She’s busy, I’m busy. She was here a few weeks ago, no free time, my hubby decided it was a horse barn cleaning weekend. Ha, no kids living at home to help with winter chores🤣so when they come we clean! We’ve had sick animals over the extremely cold winter here it seems like weekly, anything can pop up at anytime! This beloved horse in the photo couldn’t barely walk for about 3 weeks. He’s back to being his dumb”hmmm” self again this past week. Thankful for that, even though we’ve been thru a lot in the last 9 years with him and some is pretty scary. It would make your mothers heart panic.

Some varieties in the sale I have in abundance and others are limited. We had one of the hottest driest summers In my dahlia growing years and that has even caused some varieties that I love, to inevitably have to rebuild stock on. It was just too hot early on for us, insane really, and a few rows in both little fields across the yard from each other just got hit with so much high heat in the afternoons. Definitely need some light shade cloth if it’s going to be so hot right after planting. You learn new things every year about growing these beloved flowers.

For any questions you may have please check out our store policies. Hope you find something you’ve been looking for!

How do you all decorate for Halloween? Cute or Scary? When my Halloween photography lovin’ daughter was here last week from SD we squeezed in a photo shoot of the tiniest buds and dahlia blooms and all the sweetest pumpkin faces(not to mention photo bombers🐈)we miss after Halloween every year. We have been doing these guys every year since she was a little girl. I’ve made hundreds🥴probably more like a thousand if I add up those years. One year we decorated the kitchen hutch and the table and my hubby said he had counted 72 smiling faces at his morning breakfast before heading to the field🤦‍♀️I used to run the grain cart and bean combining was so boring I brought bags of these mini pumpkins to draw faces on thru out the day🤷‍♀️I had to wait til I got home to give them gloss and glitter, or a rainy day, gosh those were some long days in the tractor. But really these are so much fun to make and decorate with! Kids can use washable markers to get their face the way they want and you can go over with a permanent marker before you gloss and use glitter if you want to. Happy Halloween Weekend!
