A little over a week ago we thought it was strange that Scarlett was allowing Diana in the box with her litter of kittens. Later that same day, while closing up the barn for the night, we noticed a couple new colors added to the box. Diana gave birth to a very manageable litter of two kittens! As you can see in the pictures, both moms share responsibility for taking care of all the kittens and are so fun to watch.
Scarlett's five kittens are now four weeks old and learning how to play! They will be introduced to wet food this week and will be ready for new homes in another four weeks.

Spring is here and with it, more projects to keep our chickens on our property but out of our garden! Our current egg price just covers the cost of feed. Many of you have commented that price was cheap and you wouldn't mind paying more.. I hate to raise prices but it has to be done at this time.
Eggs are now $3/dozen
All pre-paid orders will be fulfilled without extra cost.

Did everyone get to see the solar eclipse on Monday?! I snapped a picture of it while out supervising the kids do their afternoon chores.
Monday was also my grandpa's 100th birthday! Some of the memories I'm most fond of from my childhood are with him and my grandmother here on the farm. It's been sixteen years since he passed away but we always make sure to celebrate his birthday by visiting his grave.

•Saturday morning we had kittens born! Scarlett is a first time mom and is doing so well. She gave birth to seven kittens and has only lost one.
•Jacob cannot be contained when the sun is shining. I didn't get a picture of it, but he created a new opening to enter our back pasture, since our little lamb pasture closed up the original entrance. He then proceeded to use the new opening to do random small cleanup projects in the pasture... anything involving the lawnmower the kids are sure to be there!
•Anytime that Julianna hears me remind Lorielle to walk her lambs, she is chomping at the bit to get Starlight out for a walk.
•Our brooder tank was starting to look crowded with our nineteen new chicks. They are fully feathered and were able to be moved outside to their own coop. In order to get to that point the coop had to be evacuated of our oldest flock of chickens and cleaned out.

Jacob has been working hard on fixing up the outdoor lot for the lambs that aren't going to this year's fair. That means it's also time for Lorielle to pick which lambs are going to be her 4h lambs. Halter breaking lambs at this size isn't nearly as cute or as fun as when they're babies like Starlight.

Farmer Brown decided to ween his last lamb of the season super early, forcing it to become a bottle lamb. Therefore Julianna now has her own lamb to take care of! We picked her up today and Julianna could hardly stand to wait to feed her this evening.
No surprise, Julianna wants to name her lamb Baby Shark. For now we'll say her name is pending, until we can convince Julianna to come up with an original name.

Farm update, before they attempt to burn the barn down again.. WE ADDED MORE CHICKS!! 😅😊
Eggs are eggs to some people but after collecting 30+ eggs daily, all being about the same color, for a couple months we wanted some variety. So here are our new chicks that will hopefully add dark red, dark brown, greens and even blues to our egg collection when they start laying around the end of July!

Update on today's adventure.
Loading two pigs proved to be much easier than one. The truck(no 4wd) and trailer did get stuck in the yard but was quickly remedied with a call to RoyandKathy who saved the day with his truck and a few chains.
The pigs were dropped off at Sage's Meat Processing and will be processed later this week.

We have decided to have all three pigs processed. That means we have one whole pig for sale! They are scheduled to go to the butcher March 6th. Feel free to message us if you are interested and or have any questions.

EDIT- Rather than freezer camp, we found a new home for the 3rd pig.

Nothing like starting out Valentines Day with heartbreak. Today we had to say goodbye to Walter. 💔🌈

Being able to free range our chickens gives us an odd sense of accomplishment. Something about looking out the window to see a bunch of chickens roaming the yard... It does come with "complications" or surprises, depending on how you look at them. Yesterday I went searching the property for hidden nests and found the surprise in the picture. The chickens thought the old, turned over nesting box was the perfect spot to lay eggs I guess.
This dozen will be for personal use, as I can't be sure the age of the eggs and don't want to take the chances of any of you getting a bad egg.
There is no shortage eggs here on the farm. Eggs are collected daily. Yesterday alone, I collected 33 eggs from our indoor nesting boxes.
Eggs are $2/dozen +.50 washed

During the small bout of winter weather that we finally got, our newest flock of chickens decided to start laying! We currently are getting 19 eggs a day and expect to get more in the days to come!
New layers tend to lay smaller eggs. So while they get things figured out, we will be selling eggs for $2/dozen.

With the cold temps and snowy weather we've had recently, a few people have asked how the animals are. They're chilly but well fed and have water. We've added extra bedding for everyone to make sure they're able to stay dry and cozy.
With hobby farming there's always some complications. Our outside water source is frozen so we're hauling buckets of water from our indoor bathroom to all the animals. It's also so cold that if we don't check for eggs multiple times throughout the day we will end up with frozen eggs that crack from the liquids inside expanding.
We are glad that winter is finally here but are happy to see warmer temps coming next week.

With the end of 2023 came the end of our whitetail hunting season. I ended up with one or more cold viruses that ended my season early, there's really no sense in going out just to scare everything away with coughing.☹️ Jacob managed to get another small deer on NYE.
We saw many mature bucks and does throught the season but were unlucky with the shots that we took at them.
The kids, thankfully, all are interested in this part of the farm. We allowed the oldest two to go sit for one hunt each with Jacob and Julianna helped retrieve the last deer harvested.
We plan to make a few adjustments to the property in hopes for a more successful 2024 season.

After a rough start to "our" lambing season, where two sets of twins were lost, "we" have FIVE healthy lambs!(with two ewes left to lamb) Being that I plan to take this part of my dad's hobby farm over in the near future and all the lambs are potential 4h lambs for Lorielle, we helped band and tag them tonight.

Impatiently waiting on these ladies to SHOW ME THE BABIES! They are at Farmer Brown 's house because we don't have the set up for them at our farm, so I bother him regularly by asking for updates.
