What do you drink your cider and perry out of?

We often use wine glasses, or stemless wine/cider/beer tumblers.

I think my favourite though is this gorgeous hand made perry mug. The colours are gorgeously iridescent (the photo doesn't do it justice) and it feels solid but not chunky. When I'm lingering over a drink, often when I'm drinking at home with a book for company, it holds the temperature better than glass I think.

I also love that its hand made nature and uniqueness reflects the drinks that I use it for.

Somehow the whole effect is to make the experience feel special and luxurious, but not exclusive or snobby.

We're starting to think about the Christmas Day drinks line up.

I like a champagne method cider to kick things off and I was dead impressed with this one from Naughton Cider recently. It's got a depth and richness that is uncommon in both champagne and traditional method ciders, but in the depths of winter I think will work beautifully. If you're more of a bucks fizz kinda person, you could try using traditional method/champagne method cider instead of the usual fizz. It's an excellent twist.

We're not really massive fans of turkey, so we'll usually have beef - for which a tannic, oak aged cider is a classic and our go-to is Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry Co Raison d'Etre.

We're also not massive fans of Christmas pudding, so there's a family tradition of date pudding and cream instead - which Pilton Cider would go perfectly with.

And finally, after all that rich food, it's good to have something lighter and crisper. We're currently leaning to this wonderful perry from Nightingale Cider which will pair nicely with the inevitable cheese board/buffet while collapsed in front of Call the Midwife.

What are you planning on eating and drinking on Christmas Day?

Also, would anyone be interested in a mixed cases of my eventual Christmas Day line up?

Years ago, when we were just starting to get properly interested in cider, we sat in our first pub, .

It was the end of what had been a really busy night, and a cold one at that.

We'd closed up, and were sat decompressing, just me, Susannah () and the Landlord.

We'd opened a bottle of . It hit the spot that night like nothing else. I remember us talking about how it was such a brilliant example of what a bittersweet cider should be, especially a sweeter one. We said "I wish more people would taste cider like this" and "why aren't all ciders this good".

Being in the cold weather today I suddenly remembered that moment and how much I loved Pilton then. I still do.

You know what, it's still as rich and luscious as then, all apple pie and oats and honey. It's consistently, reliably excellent. If you haven't ever tried it, you really should.

P.s. it also goes great with food - I love it with puddings, sticky toffee pudding, or fruit pies/crumble/cobbler. It'd be great with your Christmas Pudding.

Our Explore: cases will dive into a particular variety or technique and allow you to compare how different makers have expressed it.

Explore: Dabinett is the first of our apple variety cases. That's because as a widely grown cider apple it's one of the first and most common you'll come across when starting to explore cider, and hence it's one worth getting to know.

Dabinett is a widely grown bittersweet cider apple, which often expresses flavours of vanilla and orange peel.

In this case we have a single variety from Ross on Wye to set the scene, a Dabinett and Yarlington Mill blend from Gregg's Pit to show how it interacts with another bittersweet apple, and a kentish cider from BeardSpoon in which Dabinett is paired with Discovery (eating) and Bramley (cooking) apples.

Yesterday we uploaded some new stock onto the website, including some fabulous looking champagne/traditional method ciders from several Scottish makers, just in time as we start thinking of Christmas parties.

We've also added a few newbies and new vintages from old friends at Oliver's.

We can't wait to crack one of these open to try it this weekend.

What are you going to be drinking this weekend?

All of these now available at CiderVault.co.uk.

One of the things we want to help you with is to take some of what can be overwhelming choice out.

So although you can choose from our single bottles and make your own case of cider, why not give one of our mixed cases a go.

This Outstanding Perries case was nicknamed Top Shelf Perry when Susannah was putting it together because there is nothing but absolute bangers in here from Oliver's, Kertelreiter, Greggs Pit, Eric Bordelet, Little Pomona and Ross on Wye.
