Tonight, we’re enjoying the fruits of our labor. I’ve made this recipe before, and it is absolutely phenomenal. People ask what rabbit tastes like. It’s a very mild-tasting meat, and definitely reminds me of chicken. For every single chicken recipe, you can substitute rabbit. Very delicious and economical.

There are certain aspects of homesteading that are very uncomfortable to discuss. Even though I feel a little uncomfortable discussing processing day with people, it’s important to me that people understand farm life and what it entails to raise your own meat. First off, I love every one of my animals, no matter what their purpose is. They are well taken care of and respected. They are processed with the upmost care and dignity. My heart hurt yesterday when the rabbits were processed; but at the end of the day, I was excited to use my home grown meat. That might sound wrong to a lot of people, but I can enjoy the meat because I know where it came from, how it was raised, and how it was dispatched. I was their primary caretaker, and I made sure they were quiet, calm, and never afraid of being handled, so they would never be scared when the day came. I did my job, and I pray I did it well. Raising meat animals is very rewarding to me, but it comes with a heavy price: a heavy heart. However, I can also look back on their life and smile and know that they were spoiled, loved, and had no idea what happened because it was like a lighting bolt. I always shrink back a little, afraid of being judge because we “killed cute bunnies.” They are cute animals, but they’re livestock here. I remember that most people I know eat meat, and it’s absolutely no different. If I had my way, I would never buy store-bought again, but we’re not there yet. That’s our goal. Baby steps. ❤️

Well, today three rabbits were processed. Nibbles and Onyx are staying, so that helps. Processing day isn’t easy for me, but it’s important that we raise meat here. My husband and I have an arrangement: I raise them, he processes them. It works for us. You raise your animals, taking as good of care of them as you possibly can. Then the day comes. I have a philosophy for my homestead when it comes to animals we raise for meat: They will have one bad day, and that’s processing day. Our rabbits live in a barn with air conditioning in the summer, heat in the winter and always have clean water, as much fresh hay as they can eat, and clean cages. They are loved and respected. Now it’s time to start a new litter. We’ll be breeding Anna next week to Finn.

Quail farming is a great way to make money on the homestead by selling eggs, meat, and live birds, no matter how small your property is.

I came across a post yesterday from a homesteader that hit home for me. She had lost another animal; and even though she knows death is apart of farming, she said she is tempted to sale everything and just quit because the loss hurts so bad. Death is definitely apart of homesteading, and it’s the hardest part. I lost my Cayuga duck a couple of months ago to a vent prolapse. I couldn’t fix it, and she had to be put down. I lost a Langshan chick after a week of having them. One of the new Easter egger chicks had one of the worse vent prolapses I’ve ever seen and also had to be put down. Now Delilah is about to be put down. I tried all day yesterday to treat her sour crop, and it’s just not working. She’s suffering, and I know it has to be done. I love my farm, but sometimes I feel like a failure when I can’t save an animal. I will do everything in my power to help them, but sometimes there’s nothing you can do. It’s the dark side that isn’t always evident unless shared. Loss is hard. It’s damn hard. All you can do is put your chin up and say you tried.

My sweet blue Langshan Delilah is so sick. 😞 She was one of my first Langshans, so this is tough. She’s 5 years old. She has been broody, and I’ve tried to break her. I noticed she was in the run yesterday with a very pale comb. I scooped her up and separated her. Upon examining her, I found that she had sour crop. I’m doing what I can for her, but I may have her put down today. Between her age and how she’s doing, it’s not looking good. Homesteading is a wonderful thing, but it has some terrible aspects to it, mainly being death. She’s such a sweet bird. 😞

Good morning! It’s a rainy day here. I’m about to head out to start feeding after my coffee. I gave Clover a nesting box late last night. Today is day 27, and she has stopped eating her pellets. She’s been eating hay and digging in a corner. All signs she’s about to go into labor. I wasn’t going to give her a box yet, but I had an overwhelming feeling that I needed to give her a box. Maybe it’s my nerves, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. I’d hate for her to give birth on the earlier end and not have what she needs. Praying for a healthy litter, but this is her first, and sometimes you lose some or all. You got this, Clove. ❤️

I’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it again: You may not be where you want to be in your homesteading journey, but it’s okay. I know I’ve felt that way a time or two. Then I take a step back and breathe and refocus. I realize this is MY journey. No one else’s. You may think you should be farther along like someone you know. Everyone’s life is different, especially when it comes to homesteading. I know for my family it’s been a challenging past several years. I’ve gotten so discouraged that I thought about just quitting it all, but I’m not a quitter. I refuse to give up on something so good. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Homesteading fits that scripture. It’s “good work.” It’s hard, it’s tiring, it’s tedious at times; but it truly is good work. Don’t give up. Get out there and do your work with your head held high. Tend to your homestead, and thank God for the energy to do it. He’ll bless your hands. ❤️

At the beginning of this year, changes started happening in our home, for the better. Something spiritual took a deeper hold, and there’s no denying the Holy Spirit is working in each and every one of us. But not just in our house, in other’s homes too. Maybe even yours?

Last night a friend said “I don’t want to go back to where I used to be, spiritually”. And I’ve never concurred more with a statement in this season of life. Let me tell you how that resonated with me.

I don’t want to go back to consuming so much news that I lose sight that I am not of this world, I’m just living in it.

I don’t want to go back to having my time consumed with mindless battles that have nothing to do with the calling God has placed on my life.

I don’t want to go back to anxiety, fear, and the stress of thinking I have to do this in my own power only.

I don’t want to go back to believing that I’m an American first and a Christian second. Can you hear me on that? Where I spend more time arguing about amendments and the President but no time feeding the true word of God to people (and myself) so that the world actually WILL change?

I don’t want to go back to gossip, believing lies, wondering if this or that whisper is true.

I don’t want to go back to wondering what man thinks about me. I want to recklessly be obedient to God and what He knows about me.

I want to live in a peace and freedom that I’ve never experienced before.

I never want to leave this place of constant learning and conviction and access to the Holy Spirit at work in my life.

I don’t want to focus on the things of this world. I want to focus on the things above. I want to do hard work in wisdom, Spirit, and truth. I want to actually make a change and not be an echo chamber. I want to surround myself with people who challenge me to be better, not encourage my weaknesses.

January was amazing. February is going to be even more amazing.

It’s easy to fall back into the worthless things this world wants you to focus on. Choose not to.

We get to choose, friends. Today I hope you’ll choose joy, conviction, hard work, growth, and real freedom.
