There are a few downsides to keeping our chickens on pasture.

We keep a lot of separate groups of chickens, so there are a lot of coops that need to be moved. We move at least 3 coops a day, and some days it works out so they all need to be moved the same day.

The coops span over 5+ acres. Hauling feed and water to them gets time consuming.

However, this right here is my least favorite part. Chickens love a good dirt hole. When they aren’t given a dirt hole they will make their own. Now I have little chicken holes scattered across my pasture every 8 feet like the chickens were leaving a trail behind them. Molted feathers and dirt bath divots. They are the perfect size to twist an ankle in if you aren’t paying attention to where you step. And don’t even get me started on what a horse can do with an inconveniently placed 3 inch deep hole.

So here I am spending an evening with a bucket of finished compost and a shovel.

It’s a lot of ‘extra’ work that wouldn’t be necessary if everyone was cooped up in the front barn yard, but walking through the pastures and seeing the response from where the chickens have been makes it all worth it. Don’t even get me started on the health benefits for the flock!

The grit, oyster shell, and vitamins all fell together today. It will sit at the bottom of their feeder and get picked at while they eat their henhouse reserve feed on top.

The Satin chicks moved outside yesterday and are living their best lives out on pasture. Experiencing freedom, touching grass, and having absolutely no idea they’re part of my ongoing chicken addiction.

The brooders are empty. I should be celebrating? Instead, I’ve already got eggs set aside for ‘one last hatch of the year’ because apparently watching a chick zipper its way out of an egg gives me the same dopamine hit other people get from making good life choices.

Anyway, the cycle continues. At least it’s not drugs. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I tried to get a picture of this Silverudd Blue’s silhouette against the sunset tonight. He is convinced he must roost on top of the tree range flock’s run.

Instead I got his comb blending into the tree line with some moody clouds.

Can you even spot him?

Our final chicken was processed at the beginning of last month, and these birds did not disappoint.

We had quite a few individual chicken breasts weighing in at 1.25 to 1.50 pounds. Big, healthy birds that clearly made good use of all that pasture.

Raised on pasture from day 1 and fed our custom mix from the local feed store, these are exactly the kind of results I was hoping for. I couldn’t be happier with them.

Built to withstand a bear attack. Or at least a 1,300lb horse scratching her chest. Those little ermine don’t know what is coming for them!
