Know Your Pome Fruit: Forelle Pears 🍐

One of the most strikingly beautiful pear varieties, Forelle pears are instantly recognizable by their smooth yellow skin covered in vibrant red speckles. Originally from Germany, their name means trout in German, referring to their freckled skin’s resemblance to the fish.

Forelle pears are known for their crisp texture when firm, gradually softening into a sweet, juicy bite when fully ripe. They’re perfect for fresh eating, cheese boards, poaching, and even roasting. Unlike many pears, Forelle pears don’t change colour significantly when ripening, so the best way to tell if they’re ready is by gently pressing near the stem.

In South Africa, Forelle pears are harvested from mid-February to early April, with a natural ripening period post-harvest to develop their signature flavour. Their long storage potential and export viability make them a key variety for international markets.

A pear that’s as beautiful as it is delicious! 🍐

Throwback to the Early 2000s: Inspired by Nature

This ad from around 2002 captured the essence of Capespan’s Cape brand: a celebration of nature, quality, and simplicity. “Inspired by Nature” was more than just a slogan — it reflected our commitment to delivering fruit that stays true to its origins.

More than two decades later, that inspiration remains at the heart of what we do.

Capespan continues to focus on:
🍐Consistently delivering fresh, high-quality produce
🍐Building trusted global partnerships
🍐Driving innovation while protecting the environment
🍐Offering consumers the natural excellence they expect

Our journey has evolved, but our foundation stays the same: delivering nature’s best to markets around the world.

Pome Fruit Update | 2025 Season

As the 2025 harvest season progresses, we’re seeing strong quality and encouraging volumes across key pome fruit varieties from South Africa.

🍏 Granny Smith apples have started coming in. One of the oldest varieties grown locally, Granny Smith continues to hold solid market appeal across multiple segments. A 2% increase in industry volume is expected this season.
🍎 Fuji apples are also being harvested. With high demand in Far East markets, the industry anticipates a 3% year-on-year increase in volumes. Colour development is better this year across most growing areas.
🍎 Top Red apples, popular in both local and export markets such as Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, are showing steady progress. A 2% volume increase is forecast compared to last year.
🍐 Buerre Bosc pears (also known as Kaizer Alexander) are currently being wrapped up in the Western Cape. This variety remains a favourite in markets like Canada, Italy, and Russia. Colour and quality have been promising throughout the season.

We’ll continue to monitor progress across all regions and varieties as the season unfolds.

Citrus Spotlight: Eureka Lemon 🍋

A household name in the citrus world, the Eureka Lemon is known for its bright yellow skin, tangy flavor, and high juice content. Unlike some lemon varieties, Eureka lemons are grown year-round, with peak harvests ensuring a steady supply to markets worldwide.

Their thin skin and abundant juice make them a favorite for culinary use, beverages, and zesting. Whether used in dressings, marinades, or a refreshing lemonade, Eureka lemons are a staple in kitchens and food processing industries.

In South Africa, Eureka lemons are harvested from March to September, with many orchards practicing staggered harvesting to ensure consistent supply. Their high acidity and extended shelf life make them a top choice for both local and export markets.

A kitchen essential with endless uses! 🍋
