It’s our ten year anniversary of sweet laurel in March, and one of our greatest thrills was opening our cake shop at in 2018.

I remember our first day, there was a 3 hour line to get in, and one of our first customers was a father and his nine year old son. The son had an auto immune disorder and when we asked “what would you like?” his eyes shifted to his dad and he asked “what can I get?” Being able to say “anything you like!” & watching his face light up - the first bakery that he had choices in- was the highlight of that memorable day. Being a space where so many people could celebrate, indulge, and enjoy has made what we do so meaningful. It sounds corny, but we are so much more than cake, we are a community.

and I grew up in the palisades. My grade school is there, where my children now go, and I remember being evacuated in the 1993 Malibu fires to the BABC. My son’s school evacuated there last Monday. I’ve had to evacuate about a half dozen times in my years in west la. “Fire season” was an expectation, like hurricane season in the south. But like NOLA in 2005, we’ve now been hit by a generation defining event. My community is devastated. It will take years to rebuild. But the palisades is one place I am certain that people will return to so set roots over the fallen trees.

I don’t know the future of our cake shop. But I do know our incredible team is busy baking and delivering across LA from our commissary. We’re going to keep making wedding cakes, birthday cakes, morning muffins, Christmas cookies, and all the delicious memories that allow us into your lives. It’s an honor to be on the plate for your big and small moments, and we hope to be there for years to come.

We’ve had such an incredible outpouring of support, asking how to aid our business in this trying time - firstly, please donate to the incredible local initiatives across the city. Do what you can.

For SL - can you let us know what restaurants, coffee shops, hotels, venues - wherever - that you would like to see us? While we figure out our next steps with the store, we hope to expand our wholesale so that we can keep our amazing kitchen team busy 💛

What could be more celebratory than a historic speakeasy? Ringing in the new year in my newest design project, this speakeasy was built in a house where Mickey Cohen had a secret basement hiding spot (entrance through an armoire floor!) during prohibition.

To create some old world glamour in this Spanish Colonial, we tiled the walls, added some fun wallpaper, and finished the space with the Willamette Chandelier and matching LED sconces from . This is one of my favorite designs by them–made with glass crafted by artisans in Italy, stunning!

Happy new year!

Some fun film shots from last weekend’s shoot in my garage. Every year I shoot a short with my family, and every year it’s a different genre, story, and challenge. Lots of magic and make believe. Can anyone guess what it’s about? 😘💛

The most beautiful fall weather in big bear at with . Lakeside walks and pie eating are excellent ways to spend time with friends.

It’s my favorite time of year, where stepping outside feels adventurous as you fling a scarf around your neck and embrace the tart snap of cold air on your cheeks.

Also any excuse to wear my trench. And yayo looks great in my sweater 😂
