The Feedlot Short Course will be July 29-31 and we are excited to be hosting the afternoon and evening of the 30th. If you are interested in attending, click the link below to view more information!

The 3 day course, hosted by Iowa Beef Center will have topics such as:

▪️Feed mixing demonstration and evaluation.
▪️Managing and identifying lameness issues.

Our goal at Provision Cattle is to provide and meet a need; that includes everything from feeding cattle for clients, raising quality beef products for market, and making the best use of everything given by the animal itself- yes, that includes the manure.

While our main business is feeding cattle, we also know that manure is helpful for crop farmers.
**We still have some available for anyone who needs it before spring planting arrives!**

13 of 25 of our pens are located in monoslope barns with bedpack. Being under roof is another perk for performance for the cattle in our care. The cattle are comfortable and protected from the elements and have direct and easy access to feed and water.
This also helps with manure management by minimizing runoff and protecting the manure’s value to contribute to surrounding fields as fertilizer, which was a key component for our feedlot to win the National Environmental Stewardship Award under Bill Couser.

Weekends mean all hands on deck to feed the cattle twice a day. Being in central Iowa we have access to a variety of options for feed to make an ideal ration for gain and performance. Good thing we have a 5 year old to inspect the distillers grain from a nearby ethanol plant.

At Provision Cattle, we prioritize low stress handling for the cattle in our care. When our facility was designed, Temple Grandin helped ensure that we were set up to be able to work cattle, load and unload them with as little stress as possible. Just like humans, lowering stress helps the overall health and performance of the cattle. It reduces the amount of shrinkage of outgoing cattle, as well as common discounts like bruising or bloodshot ribeyes when harvested.

Welcome, we are Drew and Morgan Johnston, the owners of Provision Cattle Company. We are a custom cattle operation, specializing in finishing, based out of Nevada, IA. Formally known as Couser Cattle, we purchased the operation in 2023. Although there is new ownership, much of the management remains the same with updates happening and on the horizon!

We are permitted for 5,200 head. We have 25 pens, 13 of which are located in monoslope barns. Pen sizes vary from 60-180 head. We utilize low stress handling and work with Iowa State University Vet Med, as well as a nutritionist, to develop ideal plans for the animals in our care. Our feedlot is equipped with Performance Beef software to ensure rations are always fed correctly and billing is straight forward and accurate.

Currently, we are looking to build and diversify our client list, and would love to speak to you about feeding your cattle.

We offer custom feeding services to our clients from the greater midwest area.
Our feedlot was founded in 1977 in Central Iowa; same management, new ownership.
