Olaf Van Daalen - Anchor Innovation Manager Within my role as the Anchor Innovation Expert I have spent the past 3.5 years pioneering a packagi

At Anchor we found out that light deteriorates some of the vitamins in milk – namely vitamins A & B2 and when the light damaged these vitamins, it went on to react with proteins and fats and change the taste of your milk. We also knew that milk in our supermarkets, dairies and petrol stations can be more than two days old. So how could we ensure that we were giving New Zealanders the freshest and

most delicious tasting milk every day having made this discovery? We began begin to problem solve how best to protect your milk and keep the goodness intact. We started with the cap and ensured the light protection was complete by hermetically sealing the bottle's neck. The light will never get in here while it's on the shelf in the dairy or anywhere else along the way. We then looked at the bottle and using 3 layers of light protection. The black layer sits between the two white layers to ensure 100% protection from UV and visible light. To finish off we used multi-layer blow moulding technology so that all three layers were blown in unison to produce a single lightweight structure. Through the whole process we ensured that just like our current bottle, our new bottle was made of HDPE so it's easily recyclable and is the ideal material for New Zealand's recycling infrastructure. From the most recent survey we have found that 8/10 people are tasting the difference and enjoying the fresher taste of light protected milk.
