In 1652, the Dutch established a replenishment port for ships sailing between Europe and the East Indies at the Cape of Good Hope, on the southernmost tip of Africa. The climate was superbly suited to the growing of grapes. The rich, fertile soil of the Cape region with its sunny Mediterranean climate, led to the distillation of a brandy with a distinctly South African character; slightly darker i

n colour with a superb flavour. There was, however, no standard for brandy making until 1815, when an Englishman by the name of Francis Collison formed the first Cape Wine Trade Committee. It was said that the most valiant men would only drink Francis Collison’s special blend of brandy; according to them it was all they needed to relax at the end of a hard day. In 1915, the brandy was formally named Commando and manufactured by Francis’ grandson, Henry C. From then on, Commando would be a special brandy signifying comradeship and courage.
