It is time to cut back the many volunteer willows... So the kids and I made baskets these last few days. 🌿
Not perfect but perfectly functional and a lot of fun to make for everyone.
Now, every child has it's own basket to play with or put harvests from their own little garden patches in. 🥰
As for me, if I find the time, i would love to also make a large, flat harvest basket. We'll see if I get to it this year or the next. 😁

Good, healthy, seasonal food all grown on our homestead. We're having three kinds of quiche today: One with leek, one with mixed veggies and one with the apples we canned this fall. 🥰
Making quiche is quite a bit of work and you need space for it's preparation. Due to our living situation, we're currently not having it too often. But today is a lovely, mild day and we have simply taken an old table and placed it outdoors. Even the process of preparing the food is a lot of fun this way.🍀

Quiche ("Wähie" in Swissgerman) is one of our favorite foods in all it's variations. It's also a perfect way of combining different crops into one, delicious meal when you might not have enough of one thing to make it into a solo dish. Do you like "Wähie" as well and how do you call it?

Still no rain, no snow and no drinking water on our homestead (it's been months like that now) but the wintermagic is reliable... ✨❄️
While we all love spring and summer and being outside in the warmth all day, the quiet, peaceful wintermornings hold their very own magic.
This is usually the season of warm fires and reflection for us.
Since the weather is so dry and not super cold, we're still busy and working a lot.
But we feel deep inside, as nature shows us all around, that this is actually the time to take it slow, to look inside us and re-focus... To spin further the thread of which our dreams are woven so we don't loose the big vision in the though details of life.
It's all about dreaming, imagining, believing. An art in itself - to be practiced contiuously by those who seek fulfillment. 🌟

I wasn't sure if we'd manage to do it this year, but yesterday we finally did! We made christmas cookies. Seven different kinds of them. They look rather rustic, but they taste heavenly. 🥰

Very pleased we got to do this with the kids this year as well, even though it's always a bit stressful in our small space and with four little pairs of hands wanting to participate all at once. In the end, I think it's worth it as it's just a lovely tradition and I hope our kids will warmly remember these times we all made delicious cookies together when they do this with their own children one day. 🌟

A little compilation of joyful autumn moments on our homestead and a few thoughts, befitting of this time of year and the gray weather with few but brillant rays of sunshine we are having:

They call this way of living "the simple life". In some ways that term fits perfectly. But in others, it is far from the realities we expirience on our path.

Going off-grid with the dream of becoming self-sufficient and leading a happy, meaningful, SIMPLE life with no prior expirience in any aspect of it (but with a lot of theorethical knowledge and motivation fit to burst) is not simple at all. It is emotionally complex and challenging both phsically and mentally, but it is still the best decision we have made. For us.

I write this, because I have a tendency of prefering to share just the beautiful moments and pictures.
Not because I don't want to share the whole reality, but the most difficult moments are just not the ones when we think: "Wow, let's show this with the world!"
No, those are the moments, in which we feel sad and overwhelmed and we mostly just want to curl into ourselfs and have some peace and quiet (which you almost never get with so many living beings depending on you).

I think this way of living is often over romanticized in a sense of showing only the bright and happy aspects. And yet to me, even the hard times have their romance. They have depth and they are usually the ones that teach you the most and provide important opportunities of growth.

Every day, I am grateful to be on this journey and to get to expirience such a wealth of feelings, of life lessons, of deep thoughts and beautiful details.
This whole world is poetry and love in itself. It is the manifestation of an ancient dream and if we choose to, we can add to this dream and even create new dreams of things we might not even be able to imagine in this very moment.

Since our trees didn't bare any fruit this year, we are busily gathering wild fruit to stock up our stores for winter.
So far, we've collected around 4kg of rosehips and around 2kg of sloes.
From the rosehips we make a sweet sauce, that can be eaten as a bread toppig but also used for baking or eaten with breakfast cereal.
Maybe we'll gather some more rosehips, if we find the time to roam the surrounding hills before the birds and other animals eat the red delicious fruit.
The soles would normally not be harvested this early, but since they had always been eaten off the bushes by the time a few frosts had passed, I decided to harvest them early. We like them raw and astringent as they are too, so I figured it is worth a try to process them into jam, especially considering that we have almost no other fruit preserves and will probably be grateful for all we can get. 😄

Rose-infused almond oil and calendula infused virgin sunflower oil to be made into salves and cremes later.

We're currently extremely busy and life feels overwheling a lot these days, so I spontaneously decided to do something that fills my heart with joy and feeds my inner child with happiness. And this is it. There's not much needed to make me feel blessed, but I sometimes forget that I still need to take the time to do these small things to brighten my daily life.

Our culture of food has changed a lot since we left Switzerland almost 8 years ago.
Before we left, we ate a pretty average diet for the region we lived in.
After we left, we became vegetarian, tried being vegan (without processed vegan "alternatives"), ate mostly raw food for quite some time and had brief times without processed sugar or gluten.
With the rawfood diet, we felt the most energized and fit but over the years there have been different reasons why we didn't stick to it. One day maybe, we will be able to get back to that and see if it still feels so amazing as we remember it but for now, our journey of food isn't over.
Ever since we started our homestead, our eating habits have gradually changed and we have bought almost no fresh produce during the last two years ("only" spices, sugar, salt, oils, vinegar, various grains, pasta and dried legumes, seeds plus some luxury things like a dark chocolate, some dried or tropical fruit here and there, but rarely).
We have also lived without any storebought eggs or dairy products for over a year now. If we have eggs from our chickens, we eat eggs and we drink milk, have curds and make cheese as long as our goats can be milked - in the off seasons for these things, we simply go without.
We tried eating one of our spare roosters (a mean one who kept hurting our chickens and kept getting back into the pen even after we took him out) but all of us found our bodies just not craving meat, though it did taste good because I'm good at marinading (the thing is that the potatos I made in that same marinade tasted just as good to us).
We have also learned to eat much more seasonally during the last years and are now at a point where we want to become even more self-sufficient, and learn to eat whole plants, more wild foods and also easy crops we might not have apprechiated too much before and less grains, sugar etc.

Todays beautiful homegrown meal (radish salad, "radish green spinach", cabbage salad, sauteed brokkli and cauliflower) inspired me to share these things with you, maybe it can be a reminder to be conscious about what you eat and what food means in your life.

Lemon Cucumber
Easy to grow with or without cover, good production and a variety that catches the eye. It tastes just as any other cucumber but adds color and novelty to the harvest basket.

What's your take on the lemon cucumber?

Some of the lovely chili we're growing this year.

Can't name all the varieties, but the ones I know are:
Holiday Cheer, Turnucu Spiral, Golden Cayenne, Lemon Drop. The rest are either coincidental-crosses and/or varieties I obtained by swapping seeds of which I don't have a propper name.

There should be two or three more varieties coming, if they manage to ripen in time. So far, I find Golden Cayenne to be one of my most trustworthy chili varieties. As they have produced steadily and reliably in any year and weather. 💛

Name your favorite chili varieties in the comments!

Colorful food is the best!
While in winter, we have a lot of stews and soups, I try to make the most of the colorful bounty of summer while often cooking as a side-thought in our hectic daily life. We like fresh, raw salads of all kinds, simple, fried veggies but also baked veggies like you see in this picture.

What's your favorite summer-garden food?

La Cadero is one of our favorite tomato varieties. It's very productive in any weather, has intriguing looks and has a delicious, well balanced taste. Being an antho-variety (black shoulders where the fruit is exposed to the sun caused by the pigment anthocyanin), it has some tartness to it, some exrta spice and just the right amount of it.

A must grow here on our homestead.

One forgotten pattypan-plant later... Or what happens if you don't pick them young.

They look absolutely gorgeous, but I'm not sure how I'll process/cook them. Might cut them in half and stuff them because their skin is already very hard.

Garden-goodness.

Tomatos, zucchini, onions, eggplant , herbs - all from our garden and (after I took the pic) homemade cheese from our own goat milk on top.

I took the picture a few days ago because I found the combination so lovely - and all of the veggies here went into the same dish in the end. ✨

Impressions from our small 3-sister beds (corn, squash, beans) and the most recent harvest from them. It's all looking promising considering the production from these beds is only just getting started since we planted them pretty late in the season.

The garden is my happyplace and these beds are looking good this year! 🙏🌿🤩✨

Beautiful, homegrown food.
One thing I love about growing our own food is that we get to have so much variety!
Not only in our diet but also in the colors and shapes of our crops, this makes for a lot of extra joy while eating the fruits of our labor and I hope we can inspire some of you to follow your dreams and start growing (some) of your own, beautiful food as well! 💜
