Our culture of food has changed a lot since we left Switzerland almost 8 years ago.
Before we left, we ate a pretty average diet for the region we lived in.
After we left, we became vegetarian, tried being vegan (without processed vegan "alternatives"), ate mostly raw food for quite some time and had brief times without processed sugar or gluten.
With the rawfood diet, we felt the most energized and fit but over the years there have been different reasons why we didn't stick to it. One day maybe, we will be able to get back to that and see if it still feels so amazing as we remember it but for now, our journey of food isn't over.
Ever since we started our homestead, our eating habits have gradually changed and we have bought almost no fresh produce during the last two years ("only" spices, sugar, salt, oils, vinegar, various grains, pasta and dried legumes, seeds plus some luxury things like a dark chocolate, some dried or tropical fruit here and there, but rarely).
We have also lived without any storebought eggs or dairy products for over a year now. If we have eggs from our chickens, we eat eggs and we drink milk, have curds and make cheese as long as our goats can be milked - in the off seasons for these things, we simply go without.
We tried eating one of our spare roosters (a mean one who kept hurting our chickens and kept getting back into the pen even after we took him out) but all of us found our bodies just not craving meat, though it did taste good because I'm good at marinading (the thing is that the potatos I made in that same marinade tasted just as good to us).
We have also learned to eat much more seasonally during the last years and are now at a point where we want to become even more self-sufficient, and learn to eat whole plants, more wild foods and also easy crops we might not have apprechiated too much before and less grains, sugar etc.
Todays beautiful homegrown meal (radish salad, "radish green spinach", cabbage salad, sauteed brokkli and cauliflower) inspired me to share these things with you, maybe it can be a reminder to be conscious about what you eat and what food means in your life.
