We loved hanging out with the crew from Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC and folks from local Bismarck/Mandan businesses during July’s lunch on the Patio!
We walked away from this lunch with hearts full of gratitude for local businesses, local entrepreneurs, and the Bismarck/Mandan community!

Last week we had the privilege of spinning up cotton candy for BIO Girls to celebrate completion of their 5K run! 🥳🎉🥳
BIO Girls is on a mission to improve self-esteem in girls. This amazing organization supports girls with weekly sessions that teach positive decision-making, promote self esteem, and encourage physical activity. The Bismarck/Mandan girls wrapped up their spring session with a 5K run!

It's National Food Allergy Awareness Week!🙌🙌
Many of you know we operate in an allergen-friendly kitchen and focus on using fresh, local fruit to flavor our dye-free cotton candy. But, to celebrate National Food Allergy Awareness Week, we wanted to share why we take these extra steps to make our delicious cotton candy extra special.
We started Simple Sugar to create an experience for our daughter (it also didn't hurt that cotton candy is one of my favorite foods). We wanted her to share in the experiences of life when food brings us together. For many years, she didn't get to have many treats. Or, when she did have a treat, we watched every bite for early signs of a reaction.
Our daughter was diagnosed with her first food allergy shortly before this picture was taken. Over the next several years, we added numerous additional foods to her list of allergies. More foods than I have fingers (and some toes too). Between then and now, we have proceeded with caution when trying new foods. We read labels. We research online. We ask many questions at restaurants (and have walked out of more than one) and before every birthday party. We avoid certain brands because of poor labeling practices. We take our own snacks and drinks, just in case.
More importantly, our daughter has learned how to manage her allergies. She has learned to listen to her body. She has learned to ask questions or say no when food is offered to her. She has learned about the source of her food. She has learned about healthy food choices. And, she has us as parents, her family, friends, school nurse, teachers, doctors, and coaches to help her along the way.
So, as we celebrate Food Allergy Awareness Week, we thank all those folks who help our daughter and kids like her to manage food allergies and reduce the likelihood of reactions. And, we encourage you all to learn more about food allergies, without notions of blame. To be understanding and compassionate. To be an advocate. And, to help all kids experience the moments of life when food brings us together.

Snowy days call for baking adventures! 👩‍🍳
Granolas often contain nuts or legumes, so the selection for our family is limited. But, today we tried making it from scratch, using organic oats, sweetened with local honey and juneberries. It was not a perfect 10, but it wasn’t a flop either - we’ll have to tweak our recipe a bit!

Any great tips for homemade granola?!?

Our JUNEBERRY cotton candy cotton is packed with jammy, sweet North Dakota juneberry goodness!
When I was a kid, my mom would get juneberries in the summer time and make juneberry pie. The best part was that she would invite our neighbors, Ing and Vallie, over to enjoy that juneberry pie. Ing and Vallie were the neighborhood grandparents who made afternoon tea, taught me how to play checkers, and worked on wood projects in the garage. And, juneberry pie was Ing's favorite, so he was always so joyful when my mom invited them over!
When we start spinning juneberry cotton candy, the sweet smell reminds me of my parents sitting at the table with Ing and Vallie drinking coffee and enjoying juneberry pie. In that way, our juneberry cotton candy has a special place in our hearts. And, did I mentioned it is incredibly delicious?!? ❤

We are trucking right along this week as we introduce you guys to our new packaging!
Green is the go-to color in our house (and our youngest kiddo's fav color), so we love the new RHUBARB label -the perfect vintage green.
And, just like grandma’s famous rhubarb jam, our rhubarb cotton candy has a hint of tartness and a lot of deliciousness.

A few weeks ago we spun out some new packaging for our cotton candy. And - we think this is the perfect time to introduce you guys to all our North Dakota inspired flavors. First up - CHOKECHERRY!
Chokecherry is our founding flavor (thanks to inspiration from my mom's homemade chokecherry syrup). Ripe chokecherries combined with beet sugar - the perfect combination of tart meets sweet. 🍒🍒

This past weekend the Simple Sugar team, along with our littles, delivered cotton candy to the market at the amazing Bernie's in East Grand Forks!! Yay!!!
Bernie's market is fully stocked with locally made, sweet products and we are honored to be included! Plus, the food, coffee, and treats are amazing - we nearly tried them all!

Today our Simple Sugar family sported our red shirts for World Encephalitis Day! We are especially honored to support our dear friend and survivor, Jackie M Stebbins.❤️
Jackie is one fierce friend, mom, wife, daughter, lawyer, and writer who was diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis (AE) 4 years ago. She is now in remission and educating others about AE through JM Stebbins! Check out her blog and podcast to learn more about AE, Jackie’s story, and much more!
