So, after much trial and error today, I finished binding together my first full size broom. My first made with my broom corn , I’ve made herb brooms before.
It’s been difficult, with no lessons to guide me, but if I’m nothing else but stubborn, it was done with a lot of mistakes and rewinding.
I’ll go out tomorrow to pillage my woods and wild flower garden to find flowers to dry and sew in. Then I’ll refine the handle a bit with some black walnut stain. I will also kolross a name on it using elven script.
Stay tuned ….
When you just don’t have the breath to garden, (little respiratory infection these past two weeks) you have to do a sit down activity.

Breakfast, picked moments before! Untouched , not enhanced photo, this is how beautiful they are! I am a lucky woman.

Report from Sunflower herb farm:
Today was a productive day, cut roses, picked strawberries, blackberries, cucumbers, and trellised the butterfly purple pea. Moringa is getting bushy and elder is flowering! Luffa and lemon basil are peeking out!
Cardamom is growing fast, i hope to get pods this year.
Tomorrow I will be harvesting catnip as I have a lot out there!
If you know me, you’ll know that our little cat , Sylvester died. He was my garden companion and always rolled gleefully in the catnip. He spread out the seeds and now that part of the herb garden is labeled Sylvester’s Garden. He certainly did his part propagating the catnip!
Dill and cilantro are seeding, chamomile , motherwort, passion flower and comfrey are taking over their spots! The 3 mints are behaving like mint does-spreading fast!
Will be harvesting basil and thyme tomorrow , sage in a few days. Garlic , potatoes will be pulled in a few weeks, nettles and white sage are ready for a first trim! Trimmed rosemary last week.
Have been picking pineapple sage blossoms, oregano, yarrow . Milkweed , bee balm and marshmallow are flowering. Horsetail, epazote, mamou are thriving, echinacea is coming on slowly, next to the california poppies. The bay, lemon verbena and yerba mate are getting as tall as me!
I have one cuban oregano plant and several aloes. Always have had trouble growing those two!
The root patch is very slow this year, ginger, horseradish and turmerick are struggling. Wormwood is still tiny, as are the figs and watermelon plants.
Sadly, hibiscus sab is being eaten by the rabbits so i have live catch traps baited .
The rabbits don’t seem to care for the broom corn which is now about 5 inches tall.
Will have to replant 6 jalapeno pepper plants, the flooding finally killed them. (I’ll be planting elsewhere) The purple hull peas have been replanted twice. Just planted skullcap, summer and winter savory.
I’m still at war with the rabbits, and Emilio is still at large - digging up everything he can.
He appears to really love the rows of lemon grass. I can’t even get a glimpse of him!
The apothecary is full of drying herbs, I hope to get everything fully dried before the early summer herbs are ready.
That’s it…. I think. I’m sure I’m forgetting something….

So , final episode. The ending was very well done: the explanation of Jamie’s ghost revealed, the recap of their lives, so beautiful. I loved all the early scenes, and the face of Jaime standing in the rain while gazing up at Claire. The theme for the series went back to the first season, all the lovely glimpses of that very first year….
I was shocked when Jaimie was shot and appeared to be dead. I could feel Claire’s pain in her horrific sobs. It felt like my heart was breaking too.
Tomorrow I will watch it again to see the ending more clearly.
This is the end of a decades long passion of mine, living with Jamie and claire .
Thankfully we have another book coming, I wouldn’t know how to behave right now.

In Claire’s day, money was not always the thing you paid for goods or services . Bartering, especially for medical help or herbs, was the norm. Today I bartered with my bee keeper neighbor for some of his fresh honey . I brought him a loaf of fresh brown bread, pickles, cukes and pepper jelly!

Raining today… can’t go outside.
Made grilled cheese sandwiches on dark bread for lunch, comfort food .
Now,
I’m having a pot of Earl Grey while hand stitching seat cushions for my bedroom chairs.
Got my thick socks on and I’m toasty warm.
What are you doing on a wet, blustery day like this?

Most of the spring herbs are blooming, so if it’s still cold where you are, soak up some of this beautiful color!

Sometimes people in Louisiana say I eat strange things .
I love louisiana cuisine, it’s beautiful and rich with tradition , but…because I lived in other states years ago, I also learned to love Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Egyptian , Persian, Indian and many other ethnic foods while I was away. I worked in some great restaurants and paid attention! They taught me about wonderful deserts like baklava and cannoli. (which l started to make!)
It’s very difficult to find a crispy un-imported cannoli shell in Louisiana, Or a good piece of baklava that hasnt been made elsewhere and frozen! (Nearly impossible)
It’s safe to say that finding a good Jewish deli, or an authentic Greek restaurant is a bit harder here !
So, I cook, and I bake foods that aren’t familiar because I miss having them.
Today I made a very dark bread because I want to have a pastrami sandwich with mustard! I didn’t have rye flour (but i will get some next week) so i used a wheat and white with some cocoa powder, and molasses.
If you’ve never been to a Jewish deli , you are missing out on some of the best pastrami you’ll ever eat! I buy mine where ever I can find it.
Cooking and baking out of your comfort zone is fun and I love doing it. You never know what you’re going to be eating over here! It makes life challenging!
