On this first Mother’s Day without Mom, I thought it would be fitting to make her much loved mochi recipe. She’d probably comment on how I deviated from her traditional sweet red bean filling, but maybe she’d get a kick out of my on-trend interpretations—fresh strawberry with homemade roasted pistachio paste and matcha with black sesame butter. After all, I was always the rule breaker of the bunch, prancing around in bright red boots, so she’d expect it. Happy Mother’s Day Mom. We miss you!

I was about to grab a muddy green-colored jar of pesto paste at TJ when it dawned on me that, for the same price, I could just get the fresh organic basil and make a way better looking and tasting one with ingredients I already had at home—power greens, pistachios, olive oil, garlic, and parm…so I did. Made enough for 3 small jars, then proceeded to made sour dough focaccia dough so I could play around this morning. Stay tuned for the results…

Celebrating Steve’s b-day brunch .p.ray. The scallion & garlic focaccia and Black Forest cake were a hit. Needless to say, Steve was relieved we chose not to prank him this time and I delivered on his special cake request. But knowing us, there’s no guarantee his birthday cake will be prank-free next year😜
