Key Coffee Roast Levels
Light Roast (e.g., Cinnamon, Light City):
Appearance: Light brown, dry surface, no oil.
Flavor/Body: High acidity, light body, floral or fruity notes, high-origin flavor.
Roast Profile: Roasted to ~356–401°F, just after "first crack".
Medium Roast (e.g., City, American):
Appearance: Medium brown, little to no oil.
Flavor/Body: Balanced flavor, aroma, and acidity. Rich, nutty, or chocolatey.
Roast Profile: Roasted to ~410–428°F.
Medium-Dark/Dark Roast (e.g., Full City, Vienna, French):
Appearance: Dark brown, oily surface.
Flavor/Body: Low acidity, heavy body, bittersweet, smoky, or caramel notes.
Roast Profile: Roasted to ~440–465°F, often around "second crack".
Extra Dark/Over-roasted:
Appearance: Dark brown/black, very oily.
Flavor/Body: Intense, smoky, or ashen/burnt.
Key Considerations
Caffeine: Contrary to popular belief, light roasts have slightly more caffeine by volume (not weight) because the roasting process burns off caffeine, though the difference is minimal.
Taste Preference: Choose light for complex, acidic, and origin-specific flavors; choose dark for rich, bold, and smoky flavors.
Grind Setting: Use finer grinds for light roasts and coarser grinds for darker, oilier roasts to optimize brewing.
Note: Roast levels are not standardized across all coffee brands.
