Not many people are interested in grazing and how it can improve the land but we are. Let’s explain the above scenario and how it relates to the grass and ultimately the beef that ends up on our plates. We attempt to keep our grass leafy and nutritious, just like in the photo on the left. This might seem simple, but there’s a catch… that grass won’t remain leafy and nutritious unless it’s eaten by a grazing herbivore (our cows in this instance), and if the grazing herbivores don’t remove enough of the grass, the regrowth will not be leafy and nutritious. All that remains after a grazing event like the one above, is a rest period which is appropriate for the environment before the cycle repeats itself. That would be a relatively short rest in our high rainfall environment and a long one in a drier environment. And if this grass wasn’t eaten by a cow and turned into beef it would eventually become moribund and die, and the area would become infested with weeds. A lot claim to be regenerative, but how many are actually doing it?

We try and replicate nature in everything we do. Just like the annual wildebeest migration in the Serengeti we have our own migration. Our migration is just as important to the survival of the species. The one difference is it’s a daily migration… a daily migration of chickens following the shade of their houses, which get moved daily. We are expecting Sir David Attenborough to do a documentary about this phenomenon any time now. We are not greedy however, we will not be charging anyone to view this spectacle. P.S… they do leave their houses in the morning and evening to forage but the current heatwave has slowed them down a bit during the heat of the day 😊

If you have green leafy grass, your chickens will love it. Here’s a snapshot of the grass eaten by our layer hens and what it looks like before they enter a new strip of pasture. The added free fertiliser will ensure this grass bounces back quickly. Farm animals shouldn’t just provide nutritious food, they must improve the ecology as they do it.
