We have named her calf Harriet, after from Clarkson’s Farm - which we are really enjoying watching at the moment!

Two of our gorgeous recent arrivals - Lexi & Brie. They were both born super strong, and their mothers are doing a wonderful job caring for them.

These two heifer (female) calves have some Australian pasture genetics, which should hopefully help them thrive in our hot and humid Ballito climate ☀️🌱

A scientific study published in the Journal of Dairy Science found that using Jersey milk for cheese production can significantly reduce the environmental footprint compared with Holstein milk.

🧀 🔢 Carbon footprint per 500,000 tonnes of cheese produced:

⚫ 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻: 8 million 104 thousand tonnes CO₂-eq
🌕 𝗝𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘆: 6 million 442 thousand tonnes CO₂-eq

📉 What does this mean in practice?
Producing the same amount of cheese with Jersey milk resulted in a lower carbon footprint.

✅ 21% lower carbon footprint
✅ Lower emissions of CO₂, methane, and nitrous oxide
✅ More efficient conversion of milk into cheese

🧀 Why the difference?
Jersey milk contains higher concentrations of fat and protein, meaning less milk is needed to produce the same amount of cheese. This improves processing efficiency and reduces the environmental impact per unit of cheese produced.

As dairy processors and food companies focus increasingly on sustainability targets, milk composition is becoming just as important as milk volume.

Choosing Jerseys isn't just about producing milk — it's about producing more dairy products with a smaller environmental footprint.

Happy Mother’s Day to the real heroes of the farm 💛🐄

Today we celebrate mothers everywhere — but especially the incredible mamas in our herd. The quiet, steady, deeply instinctive work they do every single day doesn’t go unnoticed.

A cow and her calf share a bond that’s powerful and purposeful. From the moment that calf hits the ground, she’s there — cleaning, nudging, feeding, protecting. Teaching it how to be a cow. There’s no shortcut, no machine, no system that can replicate what she gives naturally.

On our farm, we believe in letting cows be mothers. Calves stay with their moms because that’s how nature designed it. It means stronger calves, healthier animals, and a calmer, more content herd. It’s not always the easiest way — but it’s the right way.

Good milk starts with happy, healthy cows. And happy cows come from respecting what they are at their core: mothers.

So today, here’s to all the moms — human and bovine — who give endlessly, nurture instinctively, and make life possible in ways we often take for granted.

SHOOO 🥵 — the heat and humidity this February have been insane!

We’re definitely looking forward to March hopefully bringing some rain and cooler weather… 🌧️🌿

Rather ironically — given they originate from the British Isles — Jersey cows are actually well known for their heat tolerance. Their smaller size gives them a larger surface area relative to body mass, which helps them cool down more efficiently.

Because of our coastal KZN climate, our breeding priorities look a little different to “typical” dairy regions. We actively select for:
✨ Lighter coat colour
✨ Smaller-framed cows
✨ Strong pasture efficiency

From the very beginning, we deliberately chose lighter-coloured animals to help build a herd better suited to our environment. This last month has definitely reminded us why!

Natural shade is another big focus for us. 🌳
Tree canopy creates cooling through transpiration — which is often far more effective than man-made structures.

Happy, comfortable cows = better milk, the natural way. 🐮🥛
