LUCKZIN DETERGENTS: TURNING A CHILDHOOD DREAM INTO A GROWING BUSINESS AT THE EASTERN CAPE EXPORT SYMPOSIUM
At just 22, Luzuko Memela is turning a childhood dream into a growing business that is creating opportunities in his rural community of KwaNikhwe in Mbizana.
Memela’s entrepreneurial journey was inspired by something close to home. Growing up, he watched his mother struggle to afford cleaning products while working hard to keep their home spotless. The experience planted an idea in his mind: to create affordable cleaning detergents that would make life easier for families like his.
That dream became a reality in January 2023, when Memela established Luckzin Detergents, a local business producing a range of cleaning products, including dishwashing liquid, bleach and washing powder.
Today, his business is not only providing affordable cleaning products but also creating employment in a community where job opportunities are still limited. Memela has already employed three people, giving young people an opportunity to earn an income and support their families.
Memela, who is one of 60 aspiring exporters exhibiting their products at the 7th Eastern Cape Export Symposium, hosted by the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) at the East London International Convention Centre from 19 - 20 August 2026, said the platform had given him an opportunity to display his products, connect with others and reach potential investors.
“I believe that someone will recognise my business. It is an amazing space to meet different people and network. However, the business has faced challenges such as a lack of funding and access to wider markets, but I am hoping for the best,” he said.
For Memela, success is about more than building a profitable company. It is about making a difference where he comes from.
“I always wanted to make a positive impact in my village, and that is exactly what I am doing. As I grow, I will take more people with me,” he said.
Welcome to the Eastern Cape Export Symposium 2026. This is where connections will open doors to new markets.
