There are few things more South African than rugby, good food, great wine, and a table full of people ready to debate every referee's decision. 🇿🇦🏉🍷
To get into the spirit for South Africa 🇿🇦 vs Argentina 🇦🇷 this Saturday (8 August), I went all in with homemade Argentine empanadas, plankie steak smothered in fresh chimichurri... and a bottle of Alvi's Drift 221 Pinotage.
But this Pinotage comes with a really cool story.
In 1928 the All Black rugby team where dubbed the "INVINCIBLES" arrived on the shores of South Africa. The rugby world was rocked when 19 yr old Alvi van der Merwe scored the his first try in history against the All Black on African Soil. Oupa Alvi was selected as the 221st player to wear green and gold and to play for the Springboks.
So every bottle in the 221 range carries that remarkable legacy forward. 🍷🏉
And the wine? Pure South African character in a glass.
The 221 Pinotage pours a deep ruby red with aromas of ripe red and black fruit, black cherries, prunes, cured meats, baking spice and a gentle hint of musty forest floor.
There's also a subtle touch of vanilla oak and to***co that draws you in before the first sip.
On the palate it's rich, bold and beautifully velvety with a fine tannin structure, medium acidity and a wonderfully smooth texture.
Layers of plum, black cherry, blueberry, cranberry, dark chocolate and warm baking spices unfold, along with something mysteriously savoury like beetroot?
All the while delicate oak and to***co linger into a long finish with an irresistible whisper of roasted coffee.
It's dry, expressive and exactly the kind of Pinotage I want beside a fire while shouting at the television during a Springbok test.
Now... as for Argentina... let's hope they play rugby a whole lot better than they played football. 😏⚽➡️🏉 IYKYK
Whether you're backing the Boks from the stadium, the couch or around the braai, raise a glass to the legends who wore the jersey before today's heroes. That's what the 221 Range is all about.
💚💛 Score prediction time!
