If sugar beans are on the menu this Sunday, add dry fish and madumbis and suddenly the pot has a little more character.

Madumbis are also known as amadumbe in South Africa, and you may know them elsewhere as taro or dasheen. They bring a lovely hearty texture to a curry like this and make a simple sugar bean dish feel that much more special.

When vinegar or lemon juice makes a salad dressing taste a little too sharp, a small amount of honey helps bring the flavours back into balance. The sweetness softens the acidity, so the dressing tastes smoother and more rounded without becoming sugary.

It's one of those small adjustments that can completely change the final result.

If you make your own salad dressings at home, what do you usually reach for to balance the acidity?

Prepare yourself, because we’re about to get into the science behind everyday cooking ingredients. This one might be a bit controversial. 🍅

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences looked at how chilling affects tomatoes and found that storing them below around 12°C can reduce the activity of genes involved in producing some of the aroma and flavour compounds that make tomatoes taste so good.

The fascinating part is that once those flavour compounds are affected by chilling, bringing tomatoes back to room temperature doesn’t completely restore them.

That said, there’s still a time and place for keeping tomatoes in the fridge.

Refrigeration can help slow ripening and extend their shelf life, especially when you need them to last a little longer.

I just found the science behind this so interesting. Cooking is full of little discoveries, and I love learning more about the ingredients we use every day.

Now I’m curious: where do you prefer to keep your tomatoes, in the fridge or out of the fridge? And why? Let’s ketchup in the comments.

Good morning! ☀️

I often take photos of the sunrise, and this one left me in awe, as they so often do, so I thought I’d share it. There is something so special about watching a new day begin.

Every time I pause to take it in, I feel this overwhelming sense of gratitude. For the incredible family I’m blessed with, my friends, and all the little things that make life so meaningful.

A sunrise is a gentle reminder that no matter what yesterday looked like, there is always a chance to begin again.

Some days will feel lighter than others, and some seasons will bring challenges we never expected. But just as the sun continues to rise, we can keep moving forward, one step at a time.

Wherever you find yourself today, I hope you find a little peace, a little strength, and a reason to smile.

Wishing you a beautiful day ahead. 💛

There’s something about a rainy day 🌧️ that makes you crave a bowl of something warm, comforting and made with love.

Dhall has always been one of those simple, nourishing dishes that fills the home with the most beautiful aromas and brings everyone together around the table.

Today, I added cauliflower to the dhall, and it gave this comforting favourite an extra touch of heartiness and flavour.

Whether you’re cooking for your family or simply looking for something cosy to make, this is one recipe worth trying.

I’d love to hear how it turns out for you. Share your feedback in the comments, or let me know if you have any questions while making it. 💛

If you’re craving a satisfying crunch, these savoury banana fritters are a lovely one to try.

Crisp on the outside and soft inside, they’re best served warm with your favourite dipping sauce.

A few tips:

• Boil the green bananas until just tender, not too soft, so they hold their shape when sliced.
• Add the water slowly to the Chilli Bite Mix. You want a runny batter that coats the banana slices.
• Serve with your favourite dipping sauce. Mayo and sweet chilli sauce work beautifully.

Haven’t made supper yet? Try this Durban lamb curry.

Tender lamb, soft potatoes, and a rich masala gravy that’s even better with rice/roti and a little carrot salad on the side. It also makes a lovely Sunday lunch or dinner at home.

For this easy potato curry recipe, I prefer to use up-to-date potatoes because they soften beautifully but still hold their shape, so you get tender golden pieces that soak up the masala without falling apart.

Serve with rice, roti, or both.
