What does it take to breed cattle that can perform in some of KwaZulu-Natal’s toughest conditions?

A new Farmer's Weekly SA feature takes readers behind the scenes at Double Bar Brahman Stud, where Nick and Priscilla Dent are building on a three-generation family connection to the Brahman breed.

Based near Wartburg, Double Bar cattle are bred and selected in demanding thornveld conditions, where they contend with intense summer heat, long distances between grazing and water, and severe heartwater and tick-borne disease pressure.

It is an environment that has shaped a very clear breeding philosophy: 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗳-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Rather than being pushed hard for sale day, Double Bar's young bulls spend much of their development out in the thornveld, walking, grazing and growing under the same conditions in which the breeding herd has to perform.

As Priscilla explains in the article, the aim behind the Double Bar motto “𝗖𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻” is very literal.
