VIP cinema from R87.50 in Bedfordview 🎬 NuMetro
Remember when drive-throughs were everywhere? Then they slowly died out. The same thing's happening to cinemas — closing down, downsizing, because we're all streaming now. And streaming's comfy… but honestly, nothing beats a proper big-screen movie. Especially like this one.
This is NuMetro VIP in Bedfordview, and it's a whole different experience:
🍸 A full bar with waiter service
🛋️ Proper leather recliner lazy-boys
🍔 You can order a meal and tell them exactly what time to bring it to your chair — it arrives mid-movie
It used to cost hundreds. Now, VIP is R175 — but here's the money-saver: with a rewards card it drops right down. We used my wife's Nedbank card and paid R87.50 (about £4 / $5.40) — and Nedbank lets you buy multiple tickets on one card, so you can sort the whole family in one transaction. 👌
Honest heads-up: the other partners on the board (ABSA Rewards, Edgars Club, Momentum Multiply from R70, Sanlam Reality) also have deals, but I haven't checked their terms — so check your own card, they vary. And if your bank isn't on NuMetro's list, they might do discounts with Ster-Kinekor instead — worth a look.

The bunny chow that changed my mind 🍛 Modern Tailors, Rosebank
I'll be honest with you — I usually don't love Indian food from restaurants. It's often overpriced for what you get, small portions, and too much bony stew instead of proper meat. So I went into this one a sceptic. Modern Tailors changed my mind completely.
It's in The Zone at Rosebank, and their weekly lunch special board (11am–4pm) is one of the best I've seen. But here's the magic: when you order a bunny chow, they bake your bread FRESH, to order, in these old coffee tins. I've never seen that anywhere — most places use bread baked that morning, or the day before. Freshly baked bunny bread on the spot is a genuine 10/10 experience.
We went in as a family. Matt had the lamb bunny (R165), I had the chicken bunny (R115), and my wife had the daily lamb curry. Proper portions, real tender meat, not a bone in sight — and every single one was a 9/10. The curry's rich, the bread's unreal.
A tip: on Thursdays it's "Bunny & B**r" — you get a free Devil's Peak draught with any bunny chow. They've also got daily curry specials, Friday biryani, and a happy hour. As always, we paid our own bill and showed the slip. 🧾
For Rosebank — one of the priciest spots in Joburg — this is a genuine find, and I'd highly recommend it.

New spot in Edenvale with daily specials 🦆 The Duck Up — go support it
There's a brand-new spot in Edenvale, and it's ridiculously fun. Ducks everywhere, cool branding, proper vibes — it's called The Duck Up, and it's opened up where the old Glassy Junction used to be. That place had a bit of a reputation, so these guys have a real job rebuilding it — and honestly, they're smashing it. All new furniture, all new energy.
I went with two mates and we paid full price for everything (this one cost me a bit — we tried three specials AND a full-price dish to show you the lot 😅). Since they're brand new, I'm scoring them in stars rather than out of ten — a friendlier scale for a spot still finding its feet.
Here's what they run:
🍗 Saturdays (on Springbok rugby game days) — bottomless wings, R150 (about £6.80 / $9.30), three flavours, unlimited. Unheard of. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ And if you wear a Bok jersey, they hit you with a Springbok shooter.
🥩 Mondays — a R100 steak and side (£4.55 / $6.20). A proper steak, not a sad one. That's a Kief deal. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
🍖 Tuesdays — ribs, R150. Solid. ⭐⭐⭐½
🔥 The Trichardo — we paid full price for this one and it was unreal. That secret sauce is special. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Worth coming back for.
🍺 Plus 2 Stella draughts for R100.
Vibes and branding: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. Value for money: ⭐⭐⭐⭐. A genuinely cool local spot that won't cost you an arm and a leg.

R140 and the kids play ALL DAY 🎢 Braaifesta Family Restaurant, Boksburg
Parents, this one's for you — save it for the holidays or a weekend.
Braaifesta in Boksburg is a proper one-stop family spot. For R140 per child (17 and younger), the kids get unlimited play the WHOLE day — trampolines, a ninja course, a ball pit, and all the arcade games included in the price. They run around and have an absolute blast while you actually get to sit and relax.
And the food's proper braai fare. We had beef brisket, steak rolls, and all the good traditional sides — braaibroodjie, pap and sous, potato salad. On taste, I'd give it a solid 8/10. The food's a little on the pricey side, I'll be honest — but here's the thing: when you factor in a full day of the kids being entertained and happy, the combined value jumps to a 9/10. That's a genuinely great family outing.

We designed a pizza for Petrone's actual menu 🍕🇮🇹
This might be the most fun we've had making a video. Petrone's — the family-run Italian pizzeria in Edenvale ,East Rand (real Napoli family, wood-fired oven) — let us design a pizza for their menu. One pizza. So naturally, we made four, brought the boys, and turned it into a proper taste-off.
Here's how it went down:
🐟 The Anchovies — here's the funny part: all of us LOVED it. A genuine 9/10. But we all knew the truth — put anchovies on a Joburg menu and most people run. So the best-loved pizza of the night never stood a chance.
🌶️ The Bush — pepperoni, bacon, jalapeños and a honey drizzle. Sweet meets heat. 9/10.
🥩 The Ron — prosciutto, sun-dried tomato, rocket, balsamic. Classy. The pizza wears a suit. 9.5 — highest score of the night. It should've won…
🏆 The Kief Deal Bandit — salami, bacon, peppadews, creamy cheese, fresh avo, rocket, balsamic. Also 9.5 — a tie at the top. So how'd we break it? The Ron was gorgeous, but Petrone's already make something like it. The Bandit had everything people actually love on one pizza — that ultimate flavour combo that just works, everywhere. Salty, creamy, fresh, tangy. Nobody said no to it. That's what goes on a menu.
🦑 And a bonus: we tried Petrone's mussels on a whim — creamy, garlicky, unreal. 8.5/10.

Tuesday buy-1-get-1-free pregos in Dowerglen 🇵🇹 Sr Frango + Old Fashioned Fish & Chips
Here's an honest one — and a genuinely good midweek deal for the community, even if the spot itself isn't going to be my regular.
Sr Frango (Portuguese) and Old Fashioned Fish & Chips share one shop on Linksfield Road, Dowerglen — one kitchen, two menus. I'll be straight with you: I found it a bit pricey for what you get. I had the full calamari strips (R105) — genuinely tasty, an 8 on flavour — but you pay R10 extra for tartar sauce and it doesn't come with a side, which for a takeaway pushes the value down to a 6.5. My wife had the beef prego (R89), which was fine — a 7.
So personally, it's not a place I'd rush back to. BUT — here's why this is worth your attention: on Tuesdays they run a "Prego Madness Special" — buy one get one free on ALL pregos, beef or chicken. That deal is genuinely good value, an 8.5 from me. One for you, one for someone else.
As always, I paid my own bill and I'm giving it to you straight — my personal feelings aside, that Tuesday deal is a solid shout.
