Minimaal en Mooi, is a local South African professional woodworking company that specialises in small-batch handcrafted propagation stations, art studio accessories, floating picture frames, home decor, butcher block countertops, and wooden countertops, and bespoke wood furniture all made out of premium quality hardwood.

A little different from our usual countertops and stair treads — but still very much about wood, restoration and seeing potential in something old.

These vintage wooden tennis rackets had definitely seen better days, so we stripped one of them right back to the original timber using some elbow grease and our incredible Festool ROTEX RO 150 geared rotary sander. Festool South Africa Dean Martin

There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching years of paint, wear and damage disappear and seeing the timber underneath come back to life.

There’s something special about the natural character of Pine wood that often gets overlooked.

Those swirling knots, flowing grain patterns and warm golden tones aren’t imperfections — they’re exactly what makes this timber so beautiful.

It doesn’t need to be complicated to maintain a beautiful wooden countertop.

This is one of our Kiaat countertops being cleaned with Rubio Monocoat Surface Care — a simple look at how we maintain a Rubio-finished wooden surface.

The process really is this straightforward:

• Wipe away any loose dust
• Spray Surface Care directly onto the surface
• Wipe clean with a soft clean cloth
• Let it dry

And, of course, quality control was closely supervised by the little boss. 😂

Often overlooked in favour of more expensive hardwoods, Pine has a charm of its own. And this kitchen is a perfect example of just how stunning it can be!

For this Buffelspoort project, we manufactured and supplied solid face-grain Pine countertops, complete with precision-cut cutouts for the sink, gas hob and waste bin.

The natural knots, flowing grain and warm golden tones give these countertops a personality that no manufactured surface could ever replicate.

Small detail. Big difference.

Routing a clean pencil edge onto one of our Pine countertops using the Festool OFKC500 cordless edge router.

The pencil edge is one of our most popular profiles because it keeps the countertop looking clean and contemporary while removing the sharpness of a square-cut edge. It’s subtle, comfortable to the touch and works with almost any kitchen style.

The OFKC500 gives us excellent control right on the edge of the workpiece - exactly where consistency matters.

📍 St. Francis Bay Project – 2025 | Part 2

For Part 1, we shared the solid Rhodesian Teak stair treads we made for this stunning St. Francis Bay home. But the timber story didn’t stop at the staircase.

For the same project, we manufactured and supplied 44 mm solid face-grain Rhodesian Teak countertops and floating shelves, carrying the warmth and character of the timber through the kitchen and bathroom spaces with the help of Rubio Monocoat South Africa Oil Plus 2C “Pure”.

A staircase doesn’t have to be purely functional. With the right timber, it becomes part of the architecture.

For this project, we manufactured and supplied 44 mm solid edge-grain Rhodesian Teak stair treads. The rich colour, distinctive grain and substantial thickness of the timber work beautifully against the dark steel structure, creating a staircase with warmth, contrast and presence.

This is how we do it. 🪵

One finish. Four very different timbers — and four completely different results.

In this batch we’re finishing a Pine countertop, Kiaat countertop, Beech top and American White Ash floating shelves using Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C Pure.

The process starts long before the oil touches the timber.

Every surface is properly prepared and cleaned with Rubio Monocoat Cleaner, allowed to dry, and only then do we mix the Oil Plus 2C with its accelerator.

Then the satisfying part begins.

Apply it.
Work it into the timber.
Give the product time to bond.
Remove every bit of excess.

What we love most is watching each species react in its own way.

The Pine develops warmer tones and brings out all those natural streaks and knots. The Kiaat becomes dramatically richer and deeper. The Beech remains beautifully clean and understated, while the American White Ash suddenly reveals just how much character is hiding in its grain.

Same product. Same process. Completely different timber.

That’s the beauty of working with real wood and Rubio Monocoat — the finish reveals what was already there.

📍 Johannesburg Project – 2026

Sometimes the size of the timber is what makes the statement.

Here we made a very heavy 100 mm thick solid edge-grain Kiaat island countertop. The extra thickness gives the island a strong architectural presence, while Kiaat’s rich colour variation and natural grain bring warmth into the clean, contemporary space.

To get it beautifully smooth we used our Geared Rotary orbital Sander - Rotex RO150 from Festool South Africa

And sealed it off to perfection with Rubio Monocoat South Africa enhancing the timber without hiding its natural character.

This is for sure one of our favorite builds so far👌🏻

No veneers.
No artificial woodgrain.
No two pieces are ever the same.

Just 100 mm of solid hardwood, built to make a statement and made to last.
