🍻 Henley Hoppers Brew Day Winter Warmers Incoming! 🍻
This past Saturday, the Henley Hoppers gathered bright and early at Henley Hoppers HQ Swagga Breweries for our latest club brew day as part of the Brewcraft Saturday Sessions.

For those who don't know, Brewcraft sponsors all the ingredients for participating clubs and breweries, with the finished beers going head-to-head on 27 June when they're poured and judged alongside beers from brewers across the Gauteng.

The competition is always fierce, with some outstanding brewers bringing their very best to the taps. Before brew day, our members voted on the recipes we wanted to enter, and two clear favourites emerged: ☕ Coffee Vanilla Oatmeal Stout rich, smooth, and packed with comforting winter flavours. 🐉 Dragon's Kiss Cinnamon Red Ale a malty red ale with a warming cinnamon twist that's perfect for the colder months.

We arrived at Swagga on a cold, misty morning and wasted no time getting the mash underway. Before long, the brewery was filled with the smell of malt, steaming mash tuns, and plenty of brewing banter. Between stirring wort, checking temperatures, sharing tips, and solving the world's brewing problems, the day flew by as the beers slowly came to life.

Now the brewing is done, and the waiting begins. The yeast is hard at work turning sweet wort into beer, and over the next few weeks we'll be keeping a close eye on fermentation before packaging and preparing both beers for competition day.

A huge thank you to Brewcraft for the opportunity and to everyone who came out to help make the day a success. We can't wait to see how these winter warmers turn out and, more importantly, to share them with everyone on 27 June. Here's hoping the dragons behave themselves and the coffee keeps flowing!

* Henley Hoppers May Brew Meeting *

Henley Hoppers May meeting was jam packed with hoppiness and learning - we had a smashing beer hop tasting with 8 different hop flavors divided between two beer styles.

Our celebrated brew legends Nick Rudling and Danie Jansen put in the work to get the brews ready well ahead of time by making the base beer and then seperarting worts into four different samples for the boil where they added their hops. There was a lot of calculating and planning that went into each addition to get a baseline of bitterness for each sample.

Nick treated the Henley Hoppers to a very tasty 2-row SMASH Ale, with a selection of Chinook, African Queen, Southern Passion and SIMCOE hops.

Danie brewed a specialty Pilsener with exceptional clarity and taste and a selection of SAAZ, Hallertauer, Tettnanger and Citra hops.

The Henley Hoppers tasted and scored each hop sample on Aroma, Flavor and Mouthfeel with a overall score for personal preference.

The night had a fair amount of banter and beer jargon to accompany the wealth of information and knowledge that was shared.

Last but not least we had the honor of tasting one of our legends, Dave T. Ashmore's English Bitter, where he used fresh Progress hop cones (leaf hops) to brew a beer with exceptional clarity and a mellowed bitterness that made for a perfectly sessionable beer.

Join the Henley Hoppers for their next brew day on Saturday 30 May 2026 Fri. 09:00am for the Winter Solstice Brew competition and come enjoy some tasters and beer talk at the Henley Hoppers HQ, Swagga Breweries, 42 Bosbok Road, Meyerton.

Please share our posts with any and all beer enthusiasts to help us grow our community

Fools & Fans 9 – What a Weekend! 🍻

Over 1400km later, we rolled in hot (literally 🔥) to set up on Friday in some serious heat—but it was all worth it. Once the taps opened, the beers flowed and our tasters were seriously impressed with what we brought to the table.

Saturday we were back at it, setting up for Swagga Breweries as they ran their very own stand for the Craft Brewers Day—keeping the great beer and good vibes going strong, even in the rain.

A special shoutout to Matt, Nick, Theo, Danie & Madeleine for making the long trip down—absolute legends! 🙌

While we didn’t snag any top spots for the club beers this time, we still had a big win—Danie taking Rookie of the Year! 🏆🍻
Well deserved—your beers just keep getting better and better!

From our first trip last year—when Danie and Nick arrived with just a few kegs and some big dreams—to what we are today with our full set up, we’re incredibly proud of the homebrew club we’ve become in such a short time. We couldn’t have done it without all our members back home. 🍺

What an incredible event Fools & Fans Beer Festival—great people, great beer, and unforgettable memories. We’ll definitely be back next year! 🍻🙌

🍻 Henley Hoppers Meeting Recap

Our latest Henley Hoppers gathering turned into a bit of a tasting masterclass as we were led through an official BJCP-style judging session featuring some fantastic beers from OC Brewery.

We started with OC Brewery new Y-XPA (Extra Pale Ale) — lighter in colour and body than a traditional pale ale but packed with tropical hop aroma. Think pineapple, peach, mango and citrus, finishing crisp and dry with a smooth bitterness. For many of the Hoppers it was the first time using an official BJCP judging sheet, working through aroma, appearance, flavour, bitterness and mouthfeel like proper judges.

Next up was their Hazy IPA, loaded with Nectaron hops from New Zealand, bursting with pineapple, passionfruit and stone fruit flavours. The beer also uses Phantasm, a powder made from Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc grape skins, which boosts those incredible tropical aromas. Safe to say this one was a crowd favourite!

Dave then poured his Irish Red Ale, a beautifully balanced and very drinkable beer with smooth caramel malt character and a gentle bitterness that kept everyone going back for another sip.

Danie followed with two beers he’s been carefully nursing for months — a rich, malty Dunkel with deep bready notes and a crisp, refreshing Kölsch that showed great balance and drinkability.

Matt rounded off the night with three of his creations:
🍺 DAS Lager – clean, crisp and super refreshing.
🌾 Mabele African Beer – brewed with sorghum, showcasing a unique grain character and a great nod to traditional African brewing.
🍫 Voldemalt Stout – a bold, dark stout packed with roasted malt, chocolate and coffee notes.

All in all it was a great evening of learning, tasting and sharing some seriously good beer. Big thanks to everyone who brought beers and took part in the judging!

February Meeting Round-Up – Henley Hoppers Homebrewers 🍻

This month’s meeting had everything — big plans, big flavours, and a few beers that reminded us why we do this hobby in the first place.

We started off with discussions around the upcoming Fools & Fans Festival, where we’ll be showcasing what the Henley Hoppers can do. Based on this meeting alone, choosing which beers to enter might be the hardest part.

Wikus then took us on a quick trip to Spain, minus the airfare:

🇪🇸 Minera Tardor Pumpkin Ale
A proper conversation starter — warm, interesting, and not your everyday beer. Definitely kept everyone curious.

🇪🇸 Minera Bonaplata California Common
Smooth, easy drinking, and disappeared from glasses faster than expected. Always a good sign.

🇪🇸 Turia Märzen
An instant favourite — malty, smooth, and the kind of beer you could happily drink all afternoon without regrets (until later).

Gavin from OC Brewery then stepped into the ring and showed us how it’s done:

🥊 BareKnuckle Boxer APA
This one didn’t pull any punches — huge fruit aromas, thick, juicy body, and absolutely packed with flavour. A proper heavyweight.

🔫 The Gunslinger Nitro Stout
Smooth, creamy, and loaded with coffee, chocolate, and vanilla notes. Rich without being heavy, and dangerously easy to drink.

🏅 Matt’s German Maibock (Silver Medal Winner)
Fresh off its silver medal win at our Oktoberfest competition, Matt’s Maibock showed exactly why it earned its place on the podium. Strong, smooth, and seriously well made.

🇬🇧 Dave’s English Dark Mild & Pecan-Wooded Fig Liquor
Dave brought along his classic English Dark Mild — easy drinking and full of character, exactly as the style should be. As if that wasn’t enough, he also shared his homemade pecan-wooded fig liquor, which was equal parts delicious and slightly dangerous.

All in all, another fantastic night of great beers, good laughs, and a reminder that this club is full of seriously talented brewers.

Fools & Fans — we’re coming for you. 🍻
