WE TRIED THE BEST ASIAN FOOD IN GQEBERHA

GQ has always been low-key about its Asian food. No Chinatown, just a handful of world-class spots hiding in plain sight. We ate at all of them.

1. Foo Jiu Sushi — Walmer's workhorse
The spot everyone ends up at when they say Let's just get sushi. Trendy, fast, bubble tea on the next table. The move is Peking duck to share, then a salmon-heavy platter and hot and sour soup that actually bites back.

2. SUKI — For when you want everything
On Prospect, bigger and louder and built for groups who can't agree. Sizzling beef done right, plus tempura and spring rolls for the table. Open till 10pm daily.

3. Izakaya Arata — Ramen counter in Richmond Hill
Small, focused, ramen is the headline. You walk in for noodles and stay for sushi. Get a ramen bowl first; that's the test.

The Runner-Ups:

Golden Coast — Taiwanese soul food
Two minutes from Foo Jiu but totally different energy. Family dinner vibes, Thai-style soups and curries, duck, dumplings. Order egg fried rice and whatever soup they have that day.

Imperial Kitchen — Old-school off Cape Road
Just off Cape Road, leaning into the classics. White tablecloths without being stiff. This is where you go for sweet and sour done right, not neon red.

Ling Long — Sunridge sleeper hit
Out in Sunridge Village, not trying to be cool, which is why it works. Huge menu, regulars love it. Get sweet and sour pork, egg foo young, or just go for the salmon platter.

Wednesday in GQ is weird. You're half tired, half broke, and 100% not trying to spend R800 on a date that could have been a video call. So don't.

Here's the actual move:

THE EAT: Something Good
Something Good Roadhouse is doing Four Seasons pizza AND their flying fish for R100. It's beachfront, it's salty, it's exactly what you want before you sit in a dark room for two hours. Get the flying fish if you like a little chaos. Get the Four Seasons if you want to share without fighting.

THE WATCH: Nu Metro Boardwalk — R90 pp
It's Wowza Wednesday. Half-price tickets, which means you can finally see the new Spider-Man without your bank app judging you. Yes, he swings. Yes, it's better on the big screen. R90 per person.

THE PLAY: Argos Leisure Bar
Fig Tree, William Moffet side. Board games, booths, no one trying to be a DJ on a Wednesday. Loser buys the next round. It's the perfect buffer between "nice dinner" and "so... now what?"

THE CHILL: Literally any beach in GQ
Hobie, Po***ck, Sards if you're feeling dramatic. Sunbathe for free. That's the date.

Total damage: Under R400 for two if you play it right. Which, in this economy, is basically free.

Tag your special someone and tell us where you're going today.

LIKE DELIVERY? YOU'RE BEING RIPPED OFF.

Here's the deal: We love staying in sweatpants. But your delivery app is running a full scam menu on top of your menu.

We ordered the same burger:
DINE-IN: R130

POPULAR APP:
Burger: R156 — because restaurants set their own prices on the app to survive the 30% commission the app charges them, which is why app prices may exceed in-store menu prices. That 20% markup is standard.

Delivery fee: R6 - R35. It varies based on your location. You pay less for nearby spots, and spikes when demand is high.

Service fee: Typically 5% of the subtotal and a maximum of R9.90 per order in SA. In the US, it's 15% of your subtotal.

Small order fee: If you're under the minimum, they add it. For most restaurants, a fee will apply to orders under a certain amount.

Real math: R156 burger + R35 delivery + R9.90 service + R40 tip = R240.90. For a R130 burger that arrives 30 mins later.

We did the math so you don't have to. Are you team order-direct or team I-don't-care-charge-me?

Drop your worst delivery receipt below. No names, just numbers. We're building the Order Direct list for town.

That's Right! We hit 100, and we’re acting like we're headlining a food festival.

But here's the deal: every great spot starts with an empty dining room and a few people who actually show up. You are those people.

We started What’s Up GQ because GQ has way too many good spots and not enough people actually telling you where to go. Like the legendary bar we had our first ever taste of b**r, the nachos hiding in Richmond Hill, and that one spot still going at 1am.

You 100 are our first regulars. The ones who knew before everyone else did.

Thank you for following, for DMing us spots, for actually pulling up when we post. It means everything.

Now, we’re just getting started. More restaurants. More bars. More clubs and late-night venues we probably shouldn’t tell you about but will anyway.

So, you’re going to want to stick around, and if you’ve been here since single digits, we owe you one.

Love,
What’s Up GQ

YOUR MONDAY PICK-ME-UP GUIDE in WALMER

It's chilly, it's Monday, and your laptop screen is already judging you.

We put together 5 quick pop-in spots in Walmer for when you need to step away, get some fresh air, and enjoy a good cup of coffee.

No rankings. No fluff. Just five very good excuses to leave the office.

What could possibly be better?

VINTAGE COFFEE CO. — 31 6th Ave, Walmer
The specialty nerd. No frills, just seriously well-roasted, well-pulled coffee. The kind of place where they actually care about the beans.

Monday Pick-Me-Up Order: Double-shot iced Americano + banana bread. Cold, strong, and doesn't mess around — just like you on Monday.

URBAN ESSPRESS — 25 6th Ave, Walmer
An authentic coffee experience with world-class baristas.

Monday Pick-Me-Up Order: Large flat white + the chicken mayo gourmet sarnie.

COBBLESTONE BISTRO & BAKERY — 40 6th Ave, Walmer
Family-owned, artisanal breads baked daily. You walk in for coffee and the scent of freshly baked goods turns your coffee into a brunch. Known for the Magic Bars that should be illegal.

Monday Pick-Me-Up Order: Cortado + Magic Bar to go. Sugar + caffeine = you being nice to your colleagues again.

STIR COFFEE COMPANY — 13 2nd Ave, Walmer
The freelancer hideout. Fresh and creative vibe, great coffee, free WiFi to sit and actually get work done. Calm, quietly social, and made for focus.

Monday Pick-Me-Up Order: Oat milk latte + smashed avo on rye. Laptop open, noise-cancelling on, Monday handled.

BRIOCHE — 181 Main Rd, Walmer
That big, beautiful converted house in Walmer with wooden floors and the huge stoep you could spend all day on. Famous for their mosbolletjies — SA's version of brioche.

Monday Pick-Me-Up Order: Strong cappuccino + toasted mosbolletjie with butter and jam. It’s sweet, buttery, and way more effective than an inspirational quote.

Your turn. Tell us which one is saving your Monday this week?

WE ATE THE BEST PIZZA IN GQEBERHA AND LOVED IT!

3. SAN FERNANDO'S - Sunridge Village

Four brick ovens, leather booths, birthday cakes with sparklers every 10 minutes. Your feed is full of it for a reason; it's the loud, family celebration spot. Famous for blistered wood-fired pies with a Peri-Peri kick.

Pro tip: book early; it's packed with families by 6:30. Order the Peri-Peri mussels, then any pie with char.

2. THE NOSE PIZZA - 155 Main Rd, Walmer

The porch that smells like fresh dough and reggae. Family-run home kitchen that started in Broadwood/Charlo and got voted best slice in town. Authentic Italian, crispy edge, soft center, always fully booked days in advance.

Pro tip: WhatsApp Eppie days ahead; it's Fri-Sat 2-8pm only. Order the margherita first to respect the crust.

1. ARKENSTONE FRYS - Mill Park
The blue guesthouse that just won Global Pizza Challenge SA 2026 - Overall Best. Warren in the leather apron working that 400-degree outdoor oven, fireplace room inside. Famous for The Arkenstone - spinach, feta, mushroom, bacon.

Pro tip: grab the fireplace table and watch the oven. Order the award winner, obviously.

RUNNER-UPS THAT STILL GO HARD:

PICASSO'S - Mount Croix: The quick, cheesy institution. Famous for the Picasso Special - chicken, bacon, mushroom and that sauce.

Pro tip: their iced coffee is the best in PE. Order the Supreme.

NOLIO - Stanley St, Richmond Hill: Date-night Neapolitan with the Aperol Spritz patio. Famous for Figs, Pancetta & Gorgonzola.

Pro tip: hit the Wednesday pizza special. Order the fig one.

QUITSCHY'S - The Yard, Walmer: Tiny corner spot, Stefano and Lucia straight from Padua via J-Bay. Thin, no-fuss, proper Italian.

Pro tip: sit outside when it's warm. Order any classic; it doesn't need to hide behind toppings.

WE'RE CALLING IT: PIZZA IS UNDEFEATED

Tag your favourite pizzaria and tell us: which slice is your favourite? We'll be waiting in the comments!

We found the best bars in GQEBERHA/PORT ELIZABETH to have a quiet MIDWEEK drink with a mate.

No loud DJs. No shouting WHAT?! every 2 minutes. Just good drinks and bars where you can actually hear the conversation.

Our pick of 5 spots for a quiet drink in Gqeberha:

1. Argos Leisure Bar, Walmer - trendy, fully licensed, pool table, good music but still low-key enough to chat. Shop 2, Fig Tree Access Park, William Moffet & Circular

2. Barney's Tavern, Boardwalk - ocean views, pub food, the classic after-work spot. Marine Drive, Shop 6, Beachfront Boardwalk

3. Cosmos Restaurant & Cocktail Bar, Newton Park - cocktails done right, open from 11AM, perfect for a long catch-up that turns into dinner.

4. Richmond Hill Brewery, Baakens Valley - aka RHBC. Craft b**r, great decor, loads of seating and surprisingly quiet for a brewery. 2 Alabaster Street

5. The Silver Fox Pub & Grill, Overbaakens - strangers walk in, leave as friends. Proper pub energy. 6 Pine Road, Overbaakens

If you're looking for quiet bars in Port Elizabeth, best bars in Gqeberha for a calm drink, or just where to drink in Port Elizabeth without losing your voice - save this.

Follow us for more bars and restaurants that are actually worth the drive.

Let's settle this: pizza is the best food in PE and it's not even close.

Burgers are great. We love a good burger. But they are structurally chaotic. One bite and you've got sauce on your shirt, lettuce on the floor, and a soggy bun giving up in the wind.

Pizza? Pizza is perfect engineering. It's shareable, it's wind-resistant on the beachfront, it feeds 4 people without anyone having to do math, and it still absolutely slaps cold for breakfast when the power is out.

Reliable. Low maintenance. Never lets you down. We can't say the same for burgers.

Tag a burger loyalist who needs to hear this and defend your go-to PE slice below. Where are you actually ordering from?

Alright PE, hot take: 90% of the "best burger in town" claims are lying.

We did the Monday burger crawl so you don't have to. 3 places actually worth leaving the couch for:

3. Balkan Burger (Boardwalk + Baakens) - Not a normal burger. Stuffed patty, somun bread, you need extra napkins. Original Balkan + draught is the order. Avoid Boardwalk on weekends unless you like queuing with half of NMU.

2. BeerYard (Richmond Hill) - You go for one quick drink and somehow end up with a Bacon & Blue Cheese burger and 2 IPAs. That courtyard is great until the PE wind shows up.

1. Crave (Walmer, The Yard) - Proper smash burger. Greasy knuckles, extra secret sauce, no lecture about brioche. Double Smash + milkshake. Park on Main Rd at lunch, trust me.

Also love Hoagie, Frederick & Son, and Dash but they just missed the cut.

Who did I get wrong? Where's your actual go-to on a Monday?
