What one year can do!

The first photo is the farm today. The second was taken at exactly the same time last year, when we had only just put up the greenhouse and hadn’t even begun making the beds.

Now there are rows of flowers, healthy soil and a working farm that has become a place for people to gather, learn and experience everything we are growing. This particular patch is where the breeding dreams come true and where all the seeds collect ring for resale are planted.

And then there is that beautiful light glowing through the greenhouse like a beacon, with all the dahlias tucked inside and slowly warming up for the new season. It feels almost as though the field is telling me, “It’s time.”

It is easy to focus on everything that still needs to be done, but looking back reminds me just how far we have come. Bed by bed, seed by seed, season by season.

A year of hard work, faith, learning and plenty of growing, for the farm and for me.

What one year can do indeed!

Well, I think these coral anemones have officially earned their place for next season.

Like all the anemones, the first stems are a little on the short side, but I don’t even mind when the flowers look like this.

What I love most is that no two seem quite the same. Some are soft blush and peachy coral, others have incredible streaks through the petals, and then every now and again you get one of those delicious deeper coral shades.

They almost look like a completely different variety depending on which flower you pick.

This is one of my favourite parts of growing flowers. You can choose a variety from a catalogue, but you don’t really know how it is going to perform, or how much you are going to love it, until it starts flowering in your own field.

These ones? Definitely going on the grow again list.

This Saturday, we’re slowing down, getting creative and spending the morning surrounded by flowers at our Field to Vase Seasonal Centrepiece Workshop.

You’ll learn how to select your stems, work with shape and movement, and bring everything together to create your own seasonal centrepiece.

Wedding flowers, grown right here on the farm.

Our first wedding flower order of the season and what a colour palette to begin with! Layers of peach, coral, blush, buttercream, burgundy and the most extraordinary Striato ranunculus.

I absolutely loved selecting these flowers to bring the bride’s moodboard to life. And with ranunculus as her favourite flower, she really did choose the perfect time of year to get married.

One of my favourite things about choosing locally grown, seasonal wedding flowers is that you get to work with what is at its absolute best in the field. The colours have so much character, the varieties are a little unexpected, and no two buckets are ever quite the same.

You’ll hear me talk about phlox a lot of late.

Not only because the colours are exceptional, or because it is one of the hardiest little flowers in my fields, blooming for what feels like forever with an exceptional vase life.

But because, for me, phlox has become a little symbol of resilience.

When I was leaving the old farm, the place I genuinely thought would be my home, there were these beautiful Care Bear-esque clouds of phlox everywhere. I remember looking at them and feeling so sad, thinking about all the work that had gone into creating those fields and wondering how much of it I was simply leaving behind.

So I cut them down, gathered them up and used them as mulch over my new dahlia beds.

And now look.

Phlox everywhere again. Little fairyland clouds beginning to form across this new field.

Partly because phlox seed actually prefers darkness to germinate, so burying those old flowers into the beds gave those seeds exactly what they needed.

But I also like to think of it as a little blessing carried from one chapter into the next.

Proof that not everything you build is lost when you have to start again. Sometimes it comes with you, just in a different form.

And did I mention the colours?!

These muddy apricots, dusty pinks and smoky purples are absolutely ridiculous.

Keep blooming. Literally.

These anemones are really starting to hit their stride now, and this colour has completely won me over.

It has that slightly faded, almost vintage quality to it - soft, unusual and somehow different on every stem.

Did you know that anemones keep growing even after you cut them?

It’s one of the reasons I love them so much. They don’t just sit beautifully in a vase, they keep evolving, stems stretching, flowers opening wider and their whole shape changing for up to 14 days in a vase.

A flower that keeps putting on a show, even after harvest.

I didn’t start with a flower farm. I started with a tiny patch to see if I could supplement my own flowers for weddings and events.

They did, and then some…

Demand quickly outgrew supply, so I built a second field five times the size.

Then I moved farms and had to start again in completely different soil.

But I wasn’t starting from zero. I was starting with seasons of lessons behind me.

That is what I’m bringing into Bud to Business in person Masterclass this September.

For three days, we’ll work on your space, your soil, what to grow, how to plan for succession, where your customers are and how to turn flowers into a real business.

You’ll even bring your own soil to test and analyse onsite, so we’re working with what you actually have, not guessing.

And because we’re doing this in early September, the goal is practical:

Get growing now, with the possibility of having flowers to sell this coming summer.

This is what Women’s Day at Femme Pétale looks like. 🌸🥂✨

Flowers in bloom, glasses clinking, good food, beautiful music and even better company, the farm has been filled with the most incredible energy today.

We’ve loved seeing so many women come together to slow down, laugh, learn, sip, wander through the gardens and simply enjoy the day. 💐
