Two friends with a shared love for soil, vines, sunlight and w**e created Thistle & W**d. It’s our creative outlet to explore the beautiful Cape’s vineyards, get our hands dirty and live out our passion for producing w**e.

People assume ""Harvest Club"" means a subscription. It's not.

There's no monthly charge, no tier system, no sign-up form. Buy any six bottles of ours over a year, mixed cases count, and you're simply in.

The w**e comes first. The club is just what **e.

We wrote a blog about it too, because even though we tried to keep it simple sometimes things need a bit of an explanation.

W**e is made from grapes, so surely it's vegan by default? Not always, but ours are.

Traditionally, w**e gets fined before bottling, sometimes using egg whites, milk proteins, gelatine, or isinglass from fish bladders. Animal-derived, so not vegan.

We follow a minimal-intervention approach that often makes fining unnecessary altogether. On the rare occasion a barrel needs help, we only use vegan-friendly agents like pea or potato protein or grape derived tannins. No animal products. No shortcuts. Just grapes, yeast and a light touch.

How long does it take? About 1.5 hours. We don't rush you through it.

What's included? A guided tasting, a walk through the cellar, and a host happy to answer pretty much anything you throw at them.

Perfect weather - not included, but indoors in the barrel cellar is just as cozy!

All three of our Chenins now carry the Certified Heritage Vineyards seal: Duwweltjie, Springdoring, and Brandnetel.

The Old Vine Project (OVP) has been protecting vineyards like these since 2002, certifying anything over 35 years old with a verified planting date seal right on the bottle.

Same grape, same w**emaking, three completely different w**es. Duwweltjie brings ripe fruit and citrus from Paarl. Springdoring leans mineral and restrained out of the Swartland. Brandnetel shows white peach, blood orange, and a touch of salinity from the Simonsberg.

Siblings, not clones.

Vinkel means fennel. It's hardy and generous, growing wild in fields on verges and in vineyards and found in gardens and dinner plates across the Cape.

The name is also a nod to ""Vinkel en Koljander,"" the old Afrikaans way of saying two things that simply belong together.

For us, that's bubbles and celebration. Never one without the other.

Five cultivars, one glass. Here's who's in the room.

Verdelho (47%) is running the show, aromatic and citrusy, the one everyone's actually there to see. Palomino (26%) is the old-timer in the corner, best known for its life in sherry, full of stories. Chenin Blanc (15%) is the reliable friend who shows up to every South African party without fail. Alvarinho (10%) just got back from the coast and won't stop talking about the sea air. Fernão Pires (2%) barely says a word, then steals the moment with one floral, unexpected line.

Whacky guest list. Somehow it works.

You'll sit down with someone from the team, work through all 6 of our award winning w**es, and hear the real story behind each one. No crowds, no rush. A cellar tour if you're keen. It's a conversational and intimate style tasting, questions are welcome but you might leave with more which is kind of the point and magic of w**e.

Tastings are by reservation, Monday to Saturday. Worth the booking.

Meet Schalk, our assistant w**emaker.

This year's harvest he summed the whole thing up in three words: ""fast, fantastic, fun.""

When you pop in to our cellar in Jonkershoek you will most likely find Schalk on top of a barrel, reversing the forklift, packing orders, presenting a tasting or making some coffee or really whatever needs doing! Schalk is the Swiss Army knife of the team. Not the Temu version, the real deal.

Our w**emaker grew up in Johannesburg, about as far from a vineyard as it gets, then moved to Stellenbosch to study Viticulture and Oenology and never really left.

Steph spent ten years as w**emaker at Fairview before starting Thistle & W**d. Her grandfather, Niel Joubert of Spier, helped establish the Stellenbosch W**e Route. Seems it was always going to end up this way.

Youngest of three sisters. Tallest too, apparently.

Our viticulturist grew up in a small coastal town on the West Coast, helping out at his parents' seaside restaurant. These days it's vines instead of tables.

Etienne holds a Masters from Montpellier SupAgro and a PhD from Stellenbosch University. Before Thistle & W**d, he worked at Delheim, then moved into industry-wide consulting through Vinpro.

Ten years in, still out in the blocks most days.
