Thistle and Weed

Thistle and Weed *CONNECTION*SIMPLICITY*HONESTY*

A collaboration between the Terblanche and Wiid Family's based in Stellenbosch.

Focusing on site specific Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Iberian-inspired blends from the Western Cape. There are always more weeds on the roads less travelled…

Two friends with a shared love for soil, vines, sunlight and wine created Thistle & W**d. It’s our creative outlet to explore the beautiful Cape’s vineyards, get our hands dirty and live out our passion for producing wine.

We often get asked what our plan is to grow Thistle and W**d, our hope is to have roots strong enough so that the branches can grow in any direction they choose. Rooted to last decades not seasons. Our new vintages have just been loaded on our website

Nastergal Red 2023 has picked up a 5-Star rating in Platter’s 2026 Wine Guide, and we couldn’t be prouder.

What started as a humble, slightly rebellious blend of so-called “non-pedigree” grapes has grown into something confident, expressive and unmistakably its own.

Proof that backing the underdogs - and trusting the vin

Nastergal 2022 just scored 95 points in Decanter - tasted blind among South Africa’s top Cabernet blends.
The twist? It isn’t one.
Made from a mix of climate-fit varieties (with no Cabernet in sight), it stood out as the only wine of its kind in the lineup - and held its own.
Proof that doing things a little differently can pay off.

Harvest 2026, done and dusted.
It came in early, kept us on our toes and didn’t leave much room for autopilot. Good winter chill, a warm, dry season and smaller berries set things up well — with just enough curveballs along the way to keep it interesting.
In the cellar, we crossed the 50-tonne mark at Leef op Hoop, brought in our first white grapes on site and worked with a few new parcels we’re excited about.
Steph calls it: “early, fresh, finished.” We’re inclined to agree.
Now it’s over to the wines. Read the whole scoop on our blog https://www.thistleandweed.co.za/.../harvest-2026-a...

Looking for an excuse to spend an afternoon in Jonkershoek?
Our tasting room is open by appointment only, which means small groups, proper pours and time to enjoy the wines without the rush.
Pull up a chair on the stoep, settle into the cellar or stretch out on the lawn with a glass in hand.
Weekends fill up quickly, so it’s best to book ahead.

If Easter looks anything like this, we’re in.
Long tables outside, platters in the middle and something cold in the glass.
Khakibos, Duwweltjie and Brandnetel were made for meals like these - fresh, food-friendly and right at home alongside just about anything you’re serving.
Good wine, good company and a table that keeps filling up. That’s our kind of long weekend. Travel safe x

Hosting Easter lunch?
Here’s our very simple Thistle & W**d pairing guide:
🥂 Vinkel Brut - snacks, starters and that first glass while everyone finds their seat.
🍋 Khakibos - seafood, salads and all the bright things on the table.
🍷 Nastergal - lamb, gravy and the kind of dishes that deserve a proper red.
After that, the rules are simple: keep the plates coming and the bottles open.
