Since 1964, the sea off Tsitsikamma has been protected, making it Africa’s oldest marine protected area. 🌊

Most of this coastline is a no-take zone. The reefs are left to the roman and the dageraad, the rock pools to the oystercatchers, the breakers to the otters. A stretch of shore is set aside for local fishing families, so old traditions carry on alongside it.

We share a name with this coastline, and we’re proud of the neighbourhood. Some places stay extraordinary because people decided to leave them be. 🪨

The Outeniqua were Khoi, and their name is usually read as they who bear honey — after the wild bees that worked the fynbos on these slopes.

The mountains were named after them. Not the other way round. 🏔️
