So today we were learning from greenhouses!

We saw the Automation of seedling production through smart greenhouses, robotics, and precision nursery systems to produce stronger, uniform seedlings at large scale, while reducing labor costs and improving efficiency.

Key Technologies:

1. Automatic Seeding Lines
A modern nursery that uses fully automated seeding lines that perform:
- Tray filling
- Soil/ growing media pressing
- Precision seed placement
- Covering
- Watering
These systems process thousands of trays per hour with minimal human involvement.

2. Robotic Seedling Handling
For:
- Moving trays
- Sorting seedlings
- Monitoring growth
- Transplanting seedlings into greenhouses or fields
- grafting

3. Smart Greenhouse Technology
Chinese smart nurseries integrate:
- Climate sensors
- Automated irrigation
- AI-based monitoring
Humidity and temperature control
Fertigation systems.

This creates uniform growth conditions and reduces disease pressure.

Simply amazing!!!!

Word of the week is Vision:

Vision is more than just what you see with your eyes—it’s what you believe is possible before it becomes real.

There will be days when the path isn’t clear, when progress feels slow, and when doubt tries to creep in. But vision is what keeps you moving forward anyway. It’s that quiet confidence inside you that says, keep going, there’s more ahead.

Question in my inbox; " Madam, how do you successfully grow your maize?"

MAIZE - THE SIMPLEST CROP TO GROW

Growing this crop successfully depends on good preparation, timing, and management throughout it's term/season. Since most of us work in a rain-fed system in our areas in Zambia. It's very important to do the following;

LAND PREP
Starting early - for Nov/Dec.
Good maize starts with good soil preparation. Therefore, clear fields, crop residues, and bushes early, then plough or rip the land to loosen the soil. Make ridges if you won't flat plant - here it depends on your method. Later, apply well-decomposed manure if available to improve yields - but this is workable in small fields.

CHOOSING SEED
Here, we go for certified hybrid maize seeds which yield high and are disease resistant. Popular varieties in Zambia include SC, PAN, and ZAMSEED types. If you want high production, avoid recycled seed. Agronomists/seed sellers would normally give you advice on this one.

PLANTING TIME
We usually plant at the start of rains ( November–December and when the soil is moist, not waterlogged)

SPACING
75 cm between rows
25 cm between plants
1–2 seeds per station

W**D CONTROL
We do the first weeding: 2–3 weeks after germination.
Second weeding: 5–6 weeks after germination. Please keep the field clean early (maize suffers if weeds compete early)

FERTILIZER APPLICATION
This is very Important for good yields:
We do a basal fertilizer at planting ( D-Compound or similar ), then a top dress at 3–5 weeks - usually Urea but I see some people going with ammonium nitrate. This fertilizer is applied when soil is moist; for best absorption.

PEST AND DISEASE CONTROL
We see Fall armyworms (major threat these days, stem borers and leaf diseases. We scout early, use pesticides and grow resistance seed varieties.

HARVESTING
We harvest when husks are dry and kernels are hard, usually 3–4 months after planting (depending on variety). Then we ensure that we dry properly to avoid mold.

NOTE
For better yields, we also practice the following;
-Rotate maize with legumes (beans, groundnuts) to improve soil fertility.
-Avoid planting maize on the same land every season
-Use herbicides carefully.
-Keep records of input costs and yields.

I hope this info will be helpful.
Thank you!

LAND PREPPING PRACTICE

Well-prepared land leads to stronger crops and better yields. 🚜🌱
It builds the foundation for good harvests. Therefore it's important do the following;
- clear fields way ahead of time
- test the soil if need be
- if you need to make beds or ridges, make them properly and add manure where needed.

In picture is land being prepped for a tomato crop.

It’s a beautiful Friday morning! And the road to business is not always smooth, it’s quite bumpy but every challenge teaches you something & every step builds success.

The weak are not for business life🤔. At times one starts the day feeling like a serious CEO😅, but as the day goes, you are chasing workers, correcting mistakes and solving problems you didn’t even plan for. 😅

And somehow, are still expected to have everything under control 🤦. But honestly, all this teaches you discipline, and stretches you and humbles you a little.

Some days don’t go as planned, but we keep the focus. We even laugh, stress a little and keep building 💪.

If you know what you are chasing, just adjust and continue. No stopping😊

ABOUT WEAKNESSES IN A BUSINESS

So, if you want to start a full fledged business beyond your survival hustle, you should know your strengths. You can’t be good at everything all the time and you should not even want to be.

The reality of starting a side business is that you are going to have weaknesses. That means, some or even many of the skills necessary to efficiently run your business must be found elsewhere. This will free up your time to continue doing only what you are best at within your business. For example, you might be good at accounting and management, but your graphic design skills will turn off your audience instead of getting them glued to your message.

So, it’s good to do the things you are good at and outsource everything else - not even trying to learn new skills in the immediate term or else it would be a disaster.

Outsourcing your weaknesses is a more effective and easily implemented alternative-also, more affordable in the long run, as the value of your time increases significantly. This is what we have done in our enterprise.😊

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER:

A small group of small scale farmers from the local community are being hosted by us for a training in basic farming skills. Yesterday’s discussion was about Drip irrigation, it's importance, advantages and disadvantages. How Drip irrigation allows you to be relevant, as a farmer all year round. Also, looked at the benefits of the DK varieties of seed maize & chemicals from Bayer.

Today we are looking at entrepreneurship, and encouraging women to have a vision, put themselves there & engage in income generating ventures. The easiest here for them here in this area being farming, and that there’s more to it than just growing maize and cabbage😅.

The Program was organized by Holland
Greentech. Yesterday, DACO Chibombo was with us. Today, we have the Block Extension Officer present & a staff from Bayer, Chibombo.

Program ends on Friday with a group of
40 people from Kamaila area in Chisamba, starting theirs tomorrow @ the same venue.
