π THE MOST CRUCIAL STAGE IN IRISH POTATO FARMING: TUBER BULKING π₯
A Must-Know Phase for Every Farmer Who Wants Bigger Yields & Better Profits!
Every stage in Irish potato farming is important but one critical phase that determines how successful your harvest will be is the tuber bulking stage.
At ROS Farms, weβve worked with farmers across Zambia, East Africa, and beyondβand one pattern is clear: those who understand and properly manage tuber bulking consistently achieve higher yields and better-quality potatoes.
Whether youβre farming half a lima or 10 hectares, this knowledge is vital. Letβs break it down.
π WHAT IS TUBER BULKING?
Tuber bulking is the stage in the potato growth cycle when the plant begins to transfer its energy from leaf and stem development into forming and enlarging the underground tubersβthe potatoes we harvest and sell.
This typically begins about 4 to 6 weeks after plant emergence, right after flowering, and can last 3 to 4 weeks, depending on your variety, climate, and management.
The phrase βevery kilo countsβ applies strongly here because this is when your crop is putting on the most weight. Tubers grow fast and accumulate starch, especially if the conditions are right.
π WHY FARMERS LOSE YIELD DURING BULKING STAGE
Many farmers unknowingly sabotage their harvest during this stage due to:
Water stress (over- or under-watering)
Poor soil fertility
Lack of potassium and calcium at the right time
Disease and pest pressure (especially late blight)
Early haulm killing or defoliation
Neglecting field monitoring and nutrient support
As a result, despite having healthy plants and good seed, the yields fall short of potentialβsimply because the bulking phase was mismanaged.
β
HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF BULKING STAGE
Letβs look at what you must do to maximize bulking and turn your potato field into a goldmine:
π§ 1. Irrigation is King
Water is life especially during bulking.
This is the period when your crop demands even and consistent soil moisture. Any water stress (drought or waterlogging) leads to:
Small, deformed tubers
Poor starch accumulation
Cracked or hollow tubers
β
Use drip irrigation if possible, or water early in the morning and late in the evening. Maintain uniform soil moisture, especially in sandy soils.
π§ͺ 2. Feed with Bulking Nutrients
The tubers need a steady supply of nutrients, especially:
Potassium (K) β Promotes size, starch buildup, and skin strength
Calcium (Ca) β Builds strong tuber cells, improves storability
Magnesium & Boron β Support carbohydrate movement and tuber uniformity
Apply a high-potash top dressing or foliar spray during early bulking. Avoid excess nitrogen at this stage it delays maturity and weakens skin.
π‘ 3. Guard Against Disease & Pests
Bulking stage coincides with peak canopy, meaning high humidity under leaves. This is the perfect time for diseases like late blight, bacterial wilt, and early blight to strike.
β
Apply preventive fungicides and scout your crop every 2β3 days.
β
Control aphids, whiteflies, and beetles that may cause secondary infections or damage tubers.
πΏ 4. Avoid Premature Top Killing (Haulming)
Some farmers cut vines too early to βforce maturity.β This is a costly mistake during bulking.
β
Let the vines die back naturally unless advised otherwise.
β
Cutting too soon reduces tuber weight and increases chances of poor skin set and bruising during harvest.
π‘ 5. Watch Soil Temperature & Mulch in Hot Zones
If youβre in a hot zone, high soil temperatures above 30Β°C can stop bulking altogether.
β
Use mulch (grass, straw, dry leaves) to keep soil cool and retain moisture.
β
Avoid cultivating deeply during bulkingβdisturbing the roots affects tuber fill.
π¬ EXPERT ADVICE FROM ROS FARMS:
"Think of tuber bulking as your cropβs payday. Everything youβve done beforeβplanting, fertilizing, spraying leads to this. If you get this stage right, youβll be smiling at harvest."
π Remember: Yield is NOT built at harvestβitβs built during BULKING.
Harvest is just the counting stage. Bulking is where the real work (and profit) happens.
