LISTENING TO THE FUTURE: MY ENGAGEMENT WITH STUDENT UNION LEADERS..
By Hon. Hussein Mukumbuta Jr. MP
Yesterday October 6th, I had the privilege of interacting with student union leaders from Mongu Catholic College of Education and Mongu Trades Training Institute.
As a Youth Member of Parliament, I went not to lecture them, but to listen. And what I heard was profound.
It is very important to note that Our students are not just asking for Diplomas and Degrees; they are asking for a future that works.
During our discussion, Three issues came out clearly:
1. The Employment Question: The biggest anxiety is not exams, but what happens after graduation. Our young people are tired of being told they are leaders of tomorrow when tomorrow never comes of Which that now is the thing of the past.
The New Dawn Government under the leadership of president Hakainde Hichilema has Given them a representation in parliament.
They also want internships that lead to jobs, skills that match industry, and access to capital, not just certificates.
2. Student Welfare: From accommodation to meal allowances, from library facilities to mental health support.
3. Participation in Governance: Students do not want to be spectators in national development. They want to be included in policy formulation.
I therefore assured them that their voices will not end in that meeting room. As a Youth in Parliament, I carry a double responsibility - to legislate for the nation, and to be a bridge for the young people.
The energy I saw in those young leaders is the same energy that will build and Grow Zambia. They are organized, articulative, and patriotic.
To the student movement, I say: Keep organizing, keep speaking up, and keep holding us leaders accountable. The future is not tomorrow - it is now, and you are it.
The youth are not just a demographic - they are the driving force of this nation.
