*MANAGING PIGLETS AFTER FARROWING*

Managing the first week after farrowing is one of the key features to ensure that piglets get the best start in life. Newborn piglets are vulnerable. Therefore, focused management is important. Feeding the sows for optimum milk production is a keystone, but focusing on hygiene and general piglet welfare is essential to ensure optimal results.

During the first week after farrowing, several important events take place in the farrowing unit. At the same time, this is the period in which the piglets are most vulnerable and might need some extra attention. This leaves a lot of responsibility with the team managing the farrowing unit, and it is important that everybody knows what to do, but also what to look for.

Look for gilts with strong, healthy feet and legs, a good underline (number and placement of teats), and a good conformation. Consider their potential for genetic improvement based on things like litter size and wean-to-service intervals.

Before first mating
Reaching the goals at first mating will promote lifetime productivity with many weaned piglets that maximise profitability in the herd.

*My Recommendation:*
1) 220-240 days of age
2) 140-160 kg of weight
3) 13-15 mm of backfat thickness
4) Mating in the 2nd heat
In short, the selection of gilts starts when the female piglets are born, and they should be assessed throughout the rearing period: at least with every transfer between units, at weaning, at 30 kg, at 60 kg, between 90-110 kg, and before the final decision for the gilts to be mated and entered into production.
