🍳 FUN FLOCK FACT: The "Early Bird" Double-Yolk Phenomenon!

🐓✨Did you know that Black Australorps are absolute superstars, but sometimes they get a little too excited to start work?

We just had a couple of massive surprises from our flock! One of our pullets started laying at just 89 days old (under 13 weeks), followed by another giant egg at 95 days. And guess what? They were DOUBLE YOLKS! 🥚🥚

Here is the quick science behind why this happens:

Early Bloomers: While Australorps usually start laying around 16–20 weeks, high-production lines can occasionally trigger early due to genetics or bright seasonal daylight.

The "Glitch" in the System: In young pullets, the reproductive system is still calibrating. Her hormones can release two yolks into the oviduct at the exact same time, creating an accidental, oversized "two-for-one" package!

A Temporary Phase: As her body matures over the next few weeks, her internal clock will sync up, and she will start laying normal, single-yolk eggs.Nature is pretty amazing (and delicious)!

Have your girls ever surprised you with an early egg or a double yolk? Drop a picture below! 👇

DEAR CHICKEN DIARY 🐔
Sunday 7 June 2026
Day 65 (10th Week)

My daughters and I spent the afternoon on our lawn in the back yard with our flock of Black Australorp Chickens. The purple on thier feathers is starting to literally shine🤩. While there are still size differences in the flock, I have managed to identify some exceptional birds and have tagged them in order to keep records on these birds to start with the breeding program.

🐥INFORMATION HUB🐥

The Black Australorp is famous for its solid black feathers, which shimmer with an iridescent, "beetle-green" shine. In bright, direct sunlight, this glossy coat can also reveal beautiful, subtle hints of purple. This purple colour is particularly pronounced on the feathers of roosters.

While their feathers have a shimmering iridescence, their actual physical features are distinct:
✅Eyes: Dark brown or black.
✅Comb & Wattles: Bright red.
✅Legs & Feet: Slate-black to dark grey, with the bottoms of the feet being pinkish-white

🐥Two days old!

I thought I was prepared and ready to take on day old chicks again.

Wow!!! What a shock to the system.

I have previously had experiance in growing 40000 boilers 8 years ago (in case you missed it, I was 8 years younger then!)

I forgot about the constant temperature control and obviously the fact that you can't fall 💤asleep on the job, especially with a fire 🔥constantly burning above highly flammable straw!

In steps SELF CONTROL and very quickly PREPARATION in the form of a duty roster for myself and my daughters. Something overlooked in previous preparation schedules. What a great opportunity to learn a lesson, adapt, improve and keep moving forward!

⏰You cant wait until life isn't hard anymore before you decide to be happy and move forward.

❗️ Fear of the unknown
❗️ Fear of failure
❗️ Fear of success
‼️ FEAR! It has held me captive and paralyzed me from taking action, but NO more!

I have finally taken the first step and STARTED.

⏰I did not find more time, in honesty there is no such thing as more time, there is always only going to be 24 hours in a day! I have realised that to gain more productive time I have to remove distractions, or I have to sacrifice time from other areas of my life.

The first distractions I needed to remove is idle scrolling through social media accounts. I have also had to remove the lies I tell myself about these scrolling sessions like....

⚡️It's research for this new business, at least I am learning something and gaining the knowledge I need to start.
⚡️I am learning about my opposition so I can do things better.
⚡️ I need to learn from those that are successful before I can start so I can start where they are!

And the BS list goes on and on.

At the end of the day what I am really doing is procrastinating and avoiding taking the first step. ⏰
