Waste-to-Energy Updates.
Greentec Energy is implementing the project, "Greening Zimbabwe's communal milk collection centres for a sustainable dairy industry," targeting milk collection centres and smallholder dairy farmers. These rely on unstable grid electricity, diesel, and LPG for milk chilling and processing. On the one hand, the risk of milk spoilage is high, driving production costs up while pushing profit margins to very low levels. On the other hand, dairy farmers generate large amounts of organic waste, which is substantially underutilized. Our intervention is helping this important sector of our economy to switch to biogas, thereby lowering the risk of milk spoilage, enhancing productivity, and helping smallholder farmers to earn more.
Today, we took advantage of a field day organized by Grasslands Research Station and Agro Prosperity Trust (APT) in Marondera to disseminate information about this project. Farmers and other stakeholders who attended had the opportunity to tour a fixed dome biogas plant under construction at APT Milk Centre.
Bio-digesters are the game-changer. Apart from the energy benefit, they are a perfect solution for organic dairy waste management. In a digester, a wide range of putrescible wastes are broken down into an inert, nutrient-rich organic fertilizer, which can be used to substitute chemical fertilizers. The water can be recycled easily, creating a closed-loop system where nothing is sent to waste.
With support from our technical and financial partners, we are building digesters for farmers in an easy, seamless, and hassle-free manner, which avoids the need for high upfront payments.
