Rochester Midland Corporation
Our key strategic partnership with Rochester Midland Corporation has led to significant benefits for both organisations. We’re proud to be part of this international network.
A family-owned business originally founded in 1888, RMC is a global expert in sustainable integrated solutions for water treatment, and a leading manufacturer of specialty chemicals for sectors such as food sanitation, industrial cleaning and water treatment.
Its water energy programmes for cooling towers, boilers and other closed loop programmes save energy through improved heat transfer efficiency, by removing existing deposits and preventing future deposits. Their wastewater treatment programmes increase water reuse, decrease solid waste and ensure compliance with wastewater discharge requirements.
Long involved with green initiatives and other sustainable efforts, RMC began to formalise its sustainability efforts in 2010, by publishing its first sustainability report.
Established in 1981, UK-based company atg UV Technology has over 35 years’ experience in UV disinfection/treatment systems. Their solutions have been successfully installed in thousands of applications across a range of industries – from drinking water, oil and gas, industrial, aquatics and marine to food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and aquaculture.
atg’s solutions use ultraviolet (UV) light operating between 200 and 280 nanometres (nm); commonly known as germicidal UV-C light. UV-C light can protect water against all known species of harmful microorganisms and viruses, by causing irreparable damage to – respectively – their DNA or RNA, rendering them harmless. In particular, UV-C light is a proven and effective barrier for the 17 known chlorine-resistant waterborne microorganisms, including cryptosporidium and giardia.
Considered one of the best disinfection technologies available, UV is now used throughout the world for both primary and secondary disinfection of water in a vast range of industries and applications. By partnering with atg, we are able to offer it to our clients.

Challenge
District cooling operators have to ensure high HSE standards at their towers, such as zero legionella contamination. They’re also mandated to reduce water consumption, increase plant availability, assure aesthetically high standards and – at the same time – cut operational costs, for example using less manpower and fewer chemicals. It isn’t easy to always get this balance right, especially given the final factor.
Solution
GWTS can help. We have provided our innovative approach to a significant number of cooling towers, for several major district cooling plant operators.
We apply foam-pumping technology with specialised Rochester Midland Corporation dispersants: a technique that’s safe, environmentally friendly, clean and fast. The towers are disinfected, and their nozzles, tanks and bases cleaned, with no resulting sludge. The outcome is even better than the alternative labour-intensive methods.
Benefits
– Cooling tower cells are in commission for longer: shutdown time is cut from 4 weeks to just 3 days.
– It takes fewer people: a team of just 10 is needed, compared to the previous 50, reducing costs and safety risks.)
– It’s better for the environment: instead of generating 8 tonnes of sludge per cell, it’s sludge-free.
– Cell availability rises as a result: from 88% to 99%.

Heat Exchangers: Removing scale
Challenge
In heat exchanger fouling – whether it’s with treated sewage effluent water, seawater or regular municipality water with added minerals – high energy costs, tube failures, operational difficulties and corrosion are often present.
To overcome this, our client was searching for a solution that could be applied with minimum process downtime or negative metallurgical effects, irrespective of the tube material: brass, stainless steel, aluminium and/or titanium.
Solution
We used ‘green certified’ and proven products from Rochester Midland Corporation in a fully automated ‘plug-and-play’ concept, that required minimum connection time. The system offers continuous monitoring, thus giving efficient and cost effective chemical application. Cycle time was reduced to a single shift with the fully closed loop system in operation, maximising plant availability. The results exceeded the client’s expectations.
During 2016, more than 100 heat exchangers and condensers were cleaned and re-commissioned using this solution.
Benefits
– No metal losses of heat exchanger tubes or plates.
– Exchangers last longer, with an extended lifecycle.
– Heat exchanger turnaround timescales are hugely reduced.
– Quick set-up.
– Significant cost and manpower savings.
Challenge
ADCO (ADNOC Group) operates several drilling and operational sites in remote desert locations. As water availability is a significant challenge, water recycling is a significant requirement.
One such operation is the Mendor Field. Home to approximately 5,000 people and 140km from any water source.
Solution
Our comprehensive integrated water solution addressed operational, personnel and accommodation needs throughout the site’s lifecycle, from initial study through to operations and maintenance. We considered all effluents – from laundry to kitchen, grey water and sewage – in a ‘zero liquid discharge’ approach.
We’re now applying a number of similar concepts, in several diverse places: the EXPO 2020 site, BeAAH construction site, Al Foah Dates Industry.
Benefits
– Capital expenditure recouped in 6 months.
– Simpler logistics scope, with consequential reduced safety risk.
– Improved environmental footprint.
Challenge
Most forms of power generation depend on turbines, which in turn depend on water-cooling condensers. These condensers provide the ideal temperature and conditions for microbiological contaminants to grow, especially bacteria. Some of these microorganisms present a public health risk, others can corrode systems – but all require controlling. Chemical disinfection, while effective in many cases, is not always the answer.
Solution
GWTS has partnered with ATG to provide UV light-based disinfection treatment. When exposed to certain wavelengths of UV light, bacteria cannot reproduce, which is ultimately a far more effective disinfecting approach. For example, health risk-carrying microorganisms such as cryptosporidium and mycobacterium are resistant to chlorine chemical treatment, but not to UV light.
Benefits
– Entirely chemical-free solution, with no health and safety or environmental risks.
– Easy to install and operate: simple chambers are attached to a cooling system. As water flows through these, it is exposed to UV-C emitting lamps. All a client needs to provide is electricity.
– It’s cost-effective. A single pass through the chambers suffices, therefore not impacting the operational efficiency of the turbine.
