Along with artificial Nasanov pheromone ( (Z)-citral, nerol, geraniol, nerolic acid, geranic acid etc), old (black) comb (and propolis) are the best attractants for swarm traps to lure the bees (see earlier post of our swarm traps)

Here they are being put in the freezer for a few days to kill off any "wax moth" eggs and larvae....(note there are 2 different species of "wax moths"...[same Family, but different Genera] which preferentially feed slightly differently...comb midrib (which can inhibit bee emergence from pupae) versus cappings...also the groove depressions in wood from pupation are from the former). More detailed descriptions for another time! :-)
Swarming season has begun here and we need to get the traps out soon to populate new hives in the apiary :-)
[yes...lemon grass oil is used by many as a cheaper alternative to more complex commercial artificial attractant pheromone, working because it does contain citral and geraniol :-) ] Though, to be fair, I've not yet found a proper peer-reviewed comparative efficacy study..."the plural of anecdote is not data"!!!! :-) :-) :-)

Last week Delroy and Chantelle locals visited and took endless short videos of the diverse birds. Here we have clipped together some of the turkey clips from Chantelle (she sent 43 video clips of various chicken, duck, pheasant, partridge etc etc etc clips! :-) )
At Heritage Farm we have 4 different breeds of turkeys alone (Crollwitzer [aka Royal Palm], White Holland, Norfolk Bronze and Kelly Bronze. They have now started laying (and one sitting on eggs), but unfortunately haven't finished separating the breeds to keep them pure yet (had just started building the breeding pens) for future work on what breed or cross will work best in Antigua....but was told by the landlord (who lives in St Thomas) last week that we're being evicted to put another "farmer" in here, so the genetic resources and breeding programme of poultry anf testing other fruit and vegetable crops here might very well stop :-( :-( :-( :-(

Freshly hatched examples of an "autos*xing" breed (rather than s*x linked cross). Here are a pair of Cream Crested Legbar chicks hatched 2 days ago, a breed which can be s*xed immediately upon hatching...the male on the left has a white spot on its head and paler whilst the female on the right has a distinct "chipmunk pattern" colouring on its back. This is due to the s*x-linked B (barring) gene allele on the Z chromosome, in conjunction with various down colour, pattern and diluter/ modifier alleles at other loci to strengthen the phenotypic s*xual dimorphism in this breed (the "Cambar chicken was the first to try this approach). This characteristic has obvious practical uses for farmers and hatcheries :-) This blue egg laying breed was developed by Prof Punnett (he of "Punnett Square" fame, the famous geneticist at Cambridge University in the 1930s, primarily using some lines of Barred Plymouth Rock, Brown Leghorns and Araucanas to get the needed alleles.
Autos*xing is not to be confused with s*x-linked crosses (using alleles for barring, gold/silver, fast/slow feathering etc s*x linked traits) which only work for s*xing in F1 generation. :-)

Finished vacuum-packing a batch of dressed Jumbo Quails! These weigh an average of 8oz (10 week old)..online "Super Jumbos" are sold/ advertised at 6oz! Normal quails sold online at 4oz (our "normals" are 5.5oz)
Our Jumbo Cotornix quails are of the Texas A&M breed, whilst we also have pure (homozygous....hence breed "true") Celedon Coturnix quail breed which lay blue eggs....Also have Bobwhite quails as a separate species (and a lone California Valley quail.....another species!)
We also have oven ready partridge for those with gourmet tastes!
